I know nothing about wigs, but I know Sherri Shepherd has a wig line. I don't know how good they are, but she wears them all the time and they look great on her.
do not purchase online. search in your area for places that will let you try them on; there are just too many variances that can make all the difference. your insurance may cover the purchase (i am assuming that amount of loss is illness related.)

I would also look to IRL shop. I think you'll be more comfortable with people who can help direct you to styles & fits that would be better suited to you.
It seems like a lot to make guesses on as a first time buyer.

I don't normally post here, but I have a IRL friend who makes custom, human hair wigs and mastectomy prosthetics. What state are you in? Even if you aren't near me I could at least ask if she could recommend anyone in your area. You can PM me if you don't want to post your location.
Ok stay with me on this one. I saw a fascinating documentary about Jewish women who never show their real hair unless it's to their H's. Most of them wore wigs that were gorgeous, real hair. Maybe Google can help you find good sources these women use? Or you could call your local cancer center or support group for recommendations. Oh and try looking at alopecia support web sites. They may have options.

I am scared that I will break down in the shop, and I don't have anyone here close enough to go with me. It is because of an illness, but at the moment no one can figure out what is causing it. I don't know why I am so embarrassed by this. I wouldn't ever judge anyone else for something like this.
Aw. I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to break down in a wig shop. If you're near Central Va I'll go with you!
Do not buy online. Check online for reviews of specialty boutiques in your area. They should have lots to try on and should be willing to cut/ style it on you to tailor it just for you. As you are probably aware, good quality human hair wigs are very pricy.
Hugs. This must be so tough. Hope your condition resolves.

First, don't be embarrassed. These are professionals and they KNOW this is a hard and an emotional process for women. You won't be the first or the last to cry in their store. A good store will treat you with compassion and make you feel secure. I'm so sorry they can't find a cause
Check out this women's youtube channel. She reviews tons of wigs and online wig shops and she is full of information. Watch her Wig Company Secrets videos 1 and 2.

This. When my aunt lost her hair to chemo, a coworker from the Orthodox Jewish community took her to her wig maker who found her a great option of 50/50 human and synthetic.

I am in Northern Virginia.
I live in MD about two hours away from NOVA. I'm in the hospital right now (had surgery this morning). If you don't mind a drive I'll send you her business info and I'll ask her who she knows when I get home tomorrow.
