I don't think you can tell. I have very wealthy friends who shop at Aldi, Payless, and thrift stores but live in million dollar homes. Some live in tiny houses and carry brand name $$$$$ bags. Some look average and I have no idea what their finances are like. I've seen "wealthy" people lose it all by buying too much stuff and living above their means.

Hmmm...that's a good question. I guess I don't think there is a true indicator. I thought that all of my friends were of the same financial means until I started going to their homes. My one GF shops thrift, drives a "normal" car, dresses like all of us, but has a new million dollar home. My other friend has all of this great stuff, goes on great vacations, lives by the beach, but is on welfare. I ma sure my friends think we are broke because I often say that I cant do things bc I am watching our money. That's only bc we are saving for a new home and I don't want to waste money on frivolous things that mean nothing to me. I also shop thrift, but only because it's my hobby. We also have small home compared to our friends, but that's bc we want to live in-town where homes are smaller and they like their big houses in the country. I think it may be one of those things you learn over time. My H and I often wonder how some of our friends with huge houses, fancy cars, etc do it and we assume they are in debt up to their eyeballs. Unless it's blatantly obvious, we have no idea.

"Poor" is hard to define and means different things to different people. Even so, if we pretend everyone agrees with the definition...there is no way to tell. Plenty of "poor" people don't appear to be poor...just like plenty of "rich" people don't appear to be rich. You cannot ever judge a book by it's cover.
There's no way to answer your question because people are unpredictable. There is no concrete predictor of damn near anything having to do with humans. Which we poors happen to be human as well.
