It's incredibly mild. Small quantities of dairy, even high lactose dairy, won't really bother me. But larger quantities of it will. Can't do skim milk in cereal, but if it's the only thing around to add to coffee, I won't notice it. Creamy soups don't tend to bother me since cream is lower in lactose, but occasionally I'll eat one that will give me a stomach ache.
The real problem for me is low-fat dairy. Years ago, I ate one of those Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (or something similar) nearly every night, and would be sick. Once I eliminated those, my problems stopped. I'll pop a couple lactaids if I'm going to drink a milkshake or something that I think might trigger it, but it's not a serious barrier to my diet.

Cheese has almost no lactose in it. Ice cream is typically higher in it. So that probably explains your reaction.

Another SS. I'd also consider myself "sensitive" vs intolerant. The type of dairy seems to matter. I can eat a decent amount of cheese and yogurt without problems. A small amount of cream is okay (cream soups seem okay, I can have one White Russian, two is a no go). I can eat a small scoop of ice cream. Straight glass of milk, too much cream, a Cold Stone-sized scoop of ice cream--I don't even want to be in the room with me and I need to camp out in the bathroom for awhile.

For multiple years, I didn't realize I was lactose intolerant. I couldn't figure out why I reacted so badly to foods cooked at home. It took me reading a damn Self magazine article with Stacey Kiebler talking about her lactose intolerance for me to connect the dots that I had a large glass of milk with every dinner at home, but not when out at a restaurant.
I'm ok with cheese but milk,ice cream is no bueno. Eggs really bother my digestion too.
I've started having issues with eggs as well. Can eat them when they are one ingredient of many, but not when eggs are the main ingredient. Which sucks because I love, love, love eggs. Getting old sucks. My doc thinks it's probably my sulfa allergy getting more sensitive.

Kind of. I can't tolerate whole milk in a latte, but nonfat milk is fine. And I can't eat processed cheese like hamburger helper without consequence (not that I really want to, lol). But cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc is fine.
i was severely intolerant as a child/teen. my mom had me tested twice for a full blown dairy allergy, but it came back negative both times. sometime around 22/23 i started slowly introducing dairy products back into my diet and haven't had much issue. now if i eat a lot of diary i will get an upset stomach, but doesn't that happen to most people if they overindulge on rich cheeses or too much ice cream?

I voted no because I'm not now but for a few years in my late teens/early 20s, I was lactose intolerant and even a small amount of lactose sent me running for the bathroom. I avoided it for a few years and then slowly started reintroducing foods without issue.

SS - I don't have traditional lactose intolerance, but I can't drink milk or eat ice cream made from milk. It gives me sinus infections. I can still eat cheese and other dairy products. My mom has the same intolerance and it has gotten progressively worse with age, so she can't eat any dairy anymore.
I'd describe myself as sensitive as well. I can have a serving or two with no problem. However, when I overdo it on milk or ice cream, I definitely pay for it. This makes me sad, because I love just about all dairy products.

SS - For a few years, I had lactose intolerance. The worst was food that mixed different types of dairy, like homemade Macaroni and Cheese with milk, butter, and cheese. But then it started getting better and more or less went away, though I still wouldn't eat mac and cheese. Then it started coming back.... and now it's going away again.
I might be crazy, but I think it's related to my weight. It was really bad when I was really fat. It went away when I lost some weight and came back when I gained weight. Now I'm losing again, and it's going away.
