I started Crossfit about a month ago and I can really see how people get addicted to it. Some of the people at my gym talk about their weight lifting shoes and their running shoes and depending on what the WOD is they wear different shoes. So...what kind of shoes should I be wearing? Right now I just wear my standard pair of tennis shoes. I know I should probably go and get fitted for a real pair of shoes to wear while I'm working out, but I have no clue what to look for.
I only did CF for a short time, but I wore (and now wear for my regular workouts) a minimalist shoe- I wear New Balance for running so I tried their brand first and liked them.

I wear running shoes on days we run more because I need a pretty supportive shoe for that, and on days when we do less running I wear Merrells with a vibram barefoot-style sole. Before I got the Merrell's I'd just take my shoes off for squats if my feet were bothering me in my running shoes. I don't think you need to go out and invest in a new pair of shoes right away unless your current shoes really aren't great anyway, which it sounds like may be the case.

This is absolutely true. I'm desperately in need of new shoes, period.
Look for minimal or zero drop shoes. I transitioned from my running shoes to a pair of converse and it's made a world of difference. We've not done any running yet so I'll bring my running shoes for this because I need the support.
