We usually see all of them, but this year we've only seen the animated ones so far. They're all supposed to be available on Amazon and iTunes on February 25, so hopefully we'll get to see the live action and documentary shorts before the Oscars.
I loved Mr. Hublot and Room on the Broom. And the one that started out as an old Mickey Mouse feature - so clever! Feral was ok, and I wasn't crazy about the Japanese one.
As for the non-nominated films, the one with the red and blue umbrellas is so cute. We know we've seen it somewhere before but can't remember where. And the last one that was narrated by George Takei - what in the F was that? lol.
We saw the animated shorts last weekend. I LOVED Mr. Hublot. I appreciated the artistry in Feral, but didn't get into the plot. The others were just ok to me, except for the Takei one which was pretty horrifying, lol!

We've seen the live action, animated, and documentary shorts. I thought Mr. Hublot was great, but the cat in Room on the Broom won my heart. I didn't care for the live action short about the French woman leaving her husband, but really enjoyed the others. The child soldier short is probably my favorite to win, but the short about the air ship was really well done and has stuck with me.

The cat in RotB was the cutest! They did a great job with his expressions.

I also loved Mr. Hublot and Room on the Broom. My husband said, "I don't know how Room on the Broom COULDN'T win!" But I haven't looked at any predictions, so I don't know. Feral looked nice, but meh. The Japanese one was... Japanese? That sounds awful, but if you like Japanese animation, sure, you'll like it.
I wasn't super enthusiastic about the Mickey Mouse one because I kind of hate old cartoons, lol. Also, it was just a rehashing of a damsel in distress thing. The visuals were cool, but without the old-style visuals, it would have been dreadful. (And that's pretty much the reason I didn't love the Artist, just FYI!)
I also loved that umbrella one and agree about the George Takei one - the hell was that?

See, I think my favorite might have been the French one. I also loved the British one with Martin Freeman, but I highly doubt that will win. The French one was actually quite suspenseful in my mind and I thought it was amazing for only being a "short" film.
The child soldier one I thought was fucked up. No. Just no. She shoots him in the leg and then... adopts him? How the HELL can you be adopted by/raised by/trust a woman who disables you? The fuck? I was not liking that. And there were some plot holes to me. BUT knowing the Academy, they will be ALL OVER the child soldier aspect of that and give it the Oscar. Otherwise, though, I don't know - I think it's between this and the French one.
The airship one was so-so. I mean, the story was great and the animation was awesome. But there were a LOT of plot holes for me in that one, too. But I know - it was 22 minutes long. Still.
I actually really liked the French one. I think it may have been my favorite. So suspenseful! Although I couldn't figure out why they didn't have someone sneak them out via a back entrance, have a coworker drive them to the gas station in a car the husband wouldn't recognize, or if they had to go on foot, at least have security accompany them.
The child solider was compelling, if stressful to watch. I could see it winning even though it wasn't my favorite. This is one short I would actually love to see made into a feature. What happened after they got out of there? How did she bring him home, from an immigration perspective? What was it like for him to adjust to a completely new life and world? I don't know if anyone could tell that story with any credibility, actually. I can't imagine. Although if there is someone who has successfully escaped that life, their tale would probably be a fascinating story.
Helium was both and sweet. The one with Martin Freeman was clever and kind of Twilight Zone-ish, and the wedding one was amusing in an ok, ha ha, punch line kind of way.
