So last night at masters, our coach was looking at his planned workout and said (out loud) "dang, this is boring." I responded with "ahhh, so it's the mile, huh?" Which somehow snowballed into "YES! Let's swim the mile!" In fact, one of our college-age guys was all "Hey, let's just swim the entire meet as a workout." When I left at 9pm, he was finishing up his last 50. He literally swam an entire meet's worth of events (all at race pace) as his workout. But I digress.
So ... we did a pool mile (1650, SCY). Timed. In water start. And for the first time in my life, I managed to cruise to an under-30 minute mile! 29:02, to be precise. I was SO proud of myself, because I don't flip turn and as a result I'm super slow in the pool at distance events. I mean, yes - 29:02 is still SLOW for a mile, but yay for a PR!
Great job! I just posted about how I don't swim really, but I can totally imagine your excitement because if it was a run with an awesome time I would be on Cloud 9!

THAT SOUNDS SO FUN!
High school lineup or college? (Were there stroke 200s or just free/IM?)
Also, yay for the 1650 PR! I have toyed with doing a meet just to see what I could do in a 1650 these days. Last summer at the 2 mi. cable swim USMS championship I had to enter a 1650 time for seeding, and I had to totally make one up. (God knows my PR from when I was 16 or 17 is… no longer relevant.) I just used my workout pace, but it got me thinking.

ETA: If you're a good flip-turner, USMS SCY nationals is in Santa Clara this year. I offer free hotel and taxi service.

I actually really thought about it! The thing is that my first HIM of the season is only about a month later, and the kind of yardage I would put in this spring if I were traveling across the country for nationals would not be conducive to doing my best bike/run training for my HIM. I felt like I needed to really DO one or the other. Next spring is San Antonio though, and depending on the hypothetical-pregnancy situation I might be in for it.
