I only need a palette of about 4 colors. I won't use more, so it just seems like a waste. Any recommendations? Should I just make my own (where can I do that?)?
Ditto the recommendation to look at MAC or Urban Decay for a make-your-own palette. My only complaint about the MAC palettes is that you can only build them in-store if you have a freestanding MAC nearby. They carry the Urban Decay ones at Sephora and Ulta.
I found a stila compact that I really like. What are their shadows like?
I have fall out issues with stila, and other issues, like the above posters.
May I ask why no UD palette. It's just that price makes it so even if you're primarily using 3-4 of the colors, and none of the others, its still worth it. Otherwise, I'd recommend a make your up at mac I guess (but for a four palette that would be about $11.50x4+$7.50 = 53.5. UD palettes are less than $50, and have full size e/s as well, so even if you're using it occasionally, it seems worth it to me). But I like justifying things.
I really like the Too Faced palettes (specifically Natural, Naked is #2).
I can't believe these didn't occur to me earlier. These are a great option, though they have 9 shadows (if memory serves) each. The price is typically less than an UD palette, definitely less than the MAC or UD build-your-own palettes, and the shadows are top-notch.

mainly because I'm trying to simplify things. I'm really trying to pare down to what I use on a regular basis - right now I have a giant thing of eyeshadow pans and I use like 3 of them and I really just want one thing that can be my go-to and not take up a lot of space.
Bare Minerals has pressed duos & quads in fun colors! They're really well reviewed, and I liked the texture/color payoff when I swatched in store. I haven't purchased any because I've got an obscene amount of e/s already, but I want some.

Okay that makes sense. If so, make your own, be it UD or mac, may make the most sense. That way you get exactly what you use.
I just got Smashbox Shades of Fame and it is awesome. But has 9 colors + 2 liners.
I also like the Smashbox eye color kits--I don't know if they still sell those, but I got the one for blue eyes and love it (though my eyes are blue and green, so maybe I need to try to track down the green too:) )
