Without even putting any interest in the actual matter at hand, I find this whole situation so fascinating. It will be interesting to see what happens to TN here in a couple of months and how all of this pans out. Could be kind of a cool case study... No? Nerdy?
I agree - I love watching how social media is changing the way we do business. Hello, Susan G Komen...
Is it common for a company as big as the nest to outsource something like this?
To this -- absolutely. I work for a large firm (and others in the past) and all have outsourced work like this.
The apology feels like a copout, the 5 days seems like eternity -- but I do think they had a "holy fucking shit" scramble and the time flew by for them. It takes a long time to get an answer from various IT parties who don't really cooperate and executive teams on how to do damage control and communicate things like this. (Been there with clients.)

"I also want you to know that we are listening to your feedback and trying to parody it as quickly as possible. We are looking into ways we can engage in more ridiculous wars on Twitter, Wikipedia and beyond. A team of dedicated posters are forwarding your feedback and edits to the proboard where we work closely to mock and subvert your efforts."
OMG I'm dying over here. I actually don't hate TN with the passion of 1000 burning suns, like some...but I do find this whole thing to be immensely entertaining.

Oh well in that case, as long as you're SORRY of COURSE we'll all go running back to your bug filled forum where we can't use the boards that we will say we love... Or not...
