The last time that I went to a gym I had a personal trainer and was going 3-4x a week. I don't have the time go to that often, now, and will probably only be going Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Possibly an occasional Sunday evening depending on the time the gym is open until. I work every Sunday until 6:30 and it's the gym on campus where I am taking classes. What would be the best use of my time? Cardio? Weights? I really don't even know where to start. I want to lose weight and get toned. I know that I have to change my eating habits, too, which I have begun to do.
Also, there is a stability ball class at 6pm on T/Th nights and I know nothing about it. Anyone able to tell me anything about a class like that?
I lurk here but since I know you from ML, I'll answer.
I just started going to the gym last week, I go M-W-F for about 30-45 minutes (will work up to about 60 minutes). I'm super out of shape and want to take it easy to get back into it. I do about 15 minutes of cardio (stationary bike), move onto the weight machines (I know, I know, free weights are better but I'm new and have shoulder/lower back problems and don't want to blow it), and then I walk a few laps around the track.
For me, I need to do cardio and some sort of weights and I notice the best results instead of just cardio.
From bumming around MFP and seeing the threads about the women that heavy lift and downloading a few books on it, I think it would be worth it to look into heavy lifting using free weights, the results are impressive. There are guidelines and programs for it, but you'd have to assess your abilities. For me, it is something I want to work up to doing - someday.
Both! More importantly, find something you enjoy doing to make working out a tolerable (ideally pleasurable) experience for you. Then progress from there, working toward specific goals if you have them.
