I ride my stationary trainer a lot in the winter. I usually catch up on shows that I've recorded on the DVR unless I'm doing a Spinerval or other cycling workout DVD. I say watch what will keep you entertained. I know some people that like to watch movies from Netflix, Hulu, Google Chrome, etc.
Do you have Netflix? I often catch up on shows on the treadmill or bike trainer. Lately I've been watching House of Cards, but in the past I've watched Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad, food shows, etc.

Keeping up with the Kardashians. TMZ. Friends. Sisterwives. HGTV. So . . . anything mindless. If it's going to be a short run (3miles), I'll listen to music. I can stand the treadmill for that long without anything to look at and I find my pace is actually better (I don't want to go fast when I'm watching a show.)
I watch my sanity run screaming in the other direction. The good news is that nothing works your mental game like running on a treadmill!
I need to keep it light & mindless. Friends re-runs, HGTV...something that can entertain, but not require much thought/attention. The thing that helps most, is the type of workout. I survive the treadmill with intervals. You can keep it simple. One min sprint, followed by one min jog, has helped me get through many workouts.

I don't have a TV in the room with my treadmill, so I stream shows and movies from Netflix on my iPad. I've been enjoying Orange is the New Black. I stick to comedies or other light things. I couldn't handle watching Schindler's List while on the TM.
If I'm doing intervals, sometimes it's easier to listen to upbeat music instead of watching TV.

I've been watching reruns of the Office lately on Netflix. Hopefully the weather breaks before I get thru all the seasons. I used to watch Food Network or the news in the morning but we don't have a tv in the basement where the TM is.

DVR or Netflix
I don't have a TM at home, just elliptical. When I used the TM at the gym, the TV is usually set to news...I glance periodically (they're awkwardly placed for steady watching)...otherwise I make it through with music and intervals. I can't really make it more than 4 miles before I want to die of boredom.
I read trashy magazines (People, Us). If I had a TV in our basement though I would watch things like Kardashians (mindless) or binge watch good shows on NEtflix (Walking Dead, Scandal, etc). But I always just read my trashy mags. Yesterday I ran ten miles reading People.

I prefer music and blankly staring out the window. We recently moved our treadmill, so that's an upgrade from the beige wall I used to stare at. Good opportunity to be very introspective
Sometimes Netflix on my Kindle if it's a short, easy day. I get a little dizzy trying to watch it.
Mindless garbage that my H would never want to watch. Say yes to the dress, sister wives, 20 kids and counting, the bachelor, the little couple, americas next top model (lol). Sometimes I will even re-watch episodes/seasons that I've already seen. I'm THAT lame.
I usually watch reality TV such as Survivor, Amazing Race or Biggest Loser. Something where people are active and their isn't much of a 'plot' to have to carefully follow.

I started watching Scandal on Netflix from the beginning this winter. It's a show I've wanted to see all the way through, since I've only been able to see episodes here and there. I watch it on my phone at the gym, and set up my laptop with speakers when I use my parents' treadmill. It's worked really well to keep me on it for the long haul. I was able to bang out 7 miles one day that way.
Netflix on the ipad. I burned through both seasons of Scandal and have started Revenge. I try to watch "girly" shows that I know my H won't watch - we usually watch shows together.
Before Netflix, I would listen to music and read blogs/websites on the ipad.
I got Netflix this winter for the very reason of winter treadmill running. I am big time sucked into Scandal. It actually makes me run faster b/c I'm so into it. Highly recommend that show. Once I'm done with that, I also have House of Cards and Orange is the New Black lined up.
The key for me is also no commercial breaks so my mind doesn't have time to wander.
Another great trick for treadmill running. Put a shirt or towel over the display so you're not constantly staring to see how much further you have to go. I read that on here and it's helped so much.

I prop the iPad up on the console and stream Netflix. I've been through Grey's, West Wing, and currently I'm working my way through Burn Notice.
DH likes to watch DVDs. He hung a shelf on the wall right in front of the treadmill so he can put the portable DVD player on it and watch whatever he's in the mood for.

I either catch up on tv shows I'm behind on (Grey's) or Netflix. Right now I'm watching The West Wing because I've never seen any of them and I love it. I'm in the middle of season 2 and it's been awesome during my runs.
