...are they worth it? I am getting sick of my feet freezing/squishing every time I slop through a slush puddle. Also, the wind seems to rip right through my shoes (esp in the toebox). I wear smartwool socks which helps a ton, but there is only so much a pair of socks can do.
I found my shoes in a gore-tex version online for $80. I really don't need another pair of shoes (still have an unopened pair in the box), but I am easily persuaded to buy all of the bargain shoes. Has anyone tried them? Do they keep your feet a lot warmer/drier?
My hiking boots are Gore Tex, but not my running shoes. I don't think it'll help with wind, but it would with water/slush. So whether it's worth it would depend on how much your problem is wind vs. water.
I'm not sure where you're from, but if this is a temporary weather situation you could put duct tape over the front of your shoes. I haven't tried it but when I went to a winter 5k race, there were several people that did it for the reasons you described.
It would be cheap if you don't mind a few strange looks... If it's a more permanent weather issue, I would say go another route.
I would say it's a semi-temporary situation. Given that it's March, hopefully I would only need them for another month or so. That being said, I would plan to use them next winter too (so probably November to March). Chicago winter is kicking my butt, and I've been skipping or treadmilling waaaaayyyy too many runs because I'm a wimp and/or don't have the right gear.
I have the Brooks Adrenaline GoreTex trail shoes -- I like them! They work wonders in light rain/dew/not-so-deep snow. If you pair them with gaiters you are set because you don't have snow jumping into your shoes.
Basically -- If you can find a pair that fit your feet properly go for it!
(the Adrenalines are not a good fit for me in general but I'll still wear them for short-ish runs in the snow/rain/mud just because they keep my toes dry!)
Next year I will (hopefully) be training through the winter for Boston, so I will probably only get one full winter (plus the remainder if this one) out of them. They're the same as my usual shoe (brooks ghost), except gore-tex. Is it safe to assume they will fit/ride roughly the same?
