Buying a leather diaper bag? I am planning to register for a regular diaper bag, but I have some bonus money saved up. I could also buy a leather, more purse-looking one on eBay.
But will it just be so heavy that I hate myself for wasting the money?
UPDATE: I always like to read what people end up doing, so I thought I would update. I ended up getting a used Storksak Elizabeth for $50 (instead of about $350). The one I got is a different color (distressed brown leather), but here is an example. Since it is used (and was relatively inexpensive), I won't worry about getting it messy, and I'll be happier with the look of it. Thanks again for the input!

I'm all about cute, fashionable bags and such, but I honestly do not really care all that much about diaper bags, as long as they aren't completely ugly. They just serve a functional purpose IMO.
I would personally use that extra money to buy a purse that I actually like for myself. And perhaps buy a big enough one that it can carry some baby things once you're out of the stage where you need a ton of stuff.
I'd spend the money on something else, but I'm not into bags, of the diaper variety or the fancy handbag variety. I'd probably be too nervous about ruining a nice leather bag with baby puke, spills, etc.
I will buck the trend of opinions above and say go for it if it's something you will enjoy. My diaper bag went everywhere with me, and DD even PTd early. For those 2 years that this thing was stuck to my hip, however, it helped that I had a bag I thought was cute (as well as roomy and practical). Is there a particular one you have your eye on or are you just generally thinking about leather? If it's a particular one you've already fallen in love with, treat yourself. If it's a general idea, look around at other diaper bags first to make sure it's "the one."
DD never spit up, pooped on or otherwise ruined my diaper bag in any way. I put it through the washer a couple of times simply because something that gets used every single day out of the house starts to look dirty after a while.
Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. It's good to consider everything, and it would be dumb to spend a fortune on a bag that is a slightly nicer diaper bag but that I really wouldn't want as a purse otherwise. I did find a really inexpensive leather diaper bag online that I think would like to carry anyway, so I will think about that!
If you want a purse-type deal, I'd go ahead and get a purse you think you'll use that's big enough to carry baby stuff and your stuff.
I can't buy purses online for the reason you said - I need to know they aren't too big or heavy or useable in some weird way.
FWIW, what I ended up doing when we all went out together was just put my wallet and phone in the diaper bag and the diaper bag hung on the stroller. I was so busy juggling the baby, stroller, things I was buying, etc., that I couldn't add a purse to that mix.
It's hard to know how you'll feel about diaper bags till you use them. You need all kinds of stuff to leave the house at first, and having all the organizer pockets of a diaper bag is handier than just a big purse. Eventually you can get away with less, and may prefer a regular purse to lugging around a diaper bag. I got a cheap black diaper bag to use at first, then eventually would leave that in the car & just take what I needed in my purse. Leather is pretty easy to wipe down, so if you like the bag I'd go for it.
