What's helped me tremendously is logging my food intake on myfitness pal (free) It was truly eye opening to me what I thought I was eating vs. what I was actually taking in.
For workouts there are tons of free/low cost alternatives. fitnessblender.com is free and has all types of workouts Jillian Michaels DVDs are great and only 30 minutes.
I'd say find something you like to do. Whether it's a hot yoga class, pilates, zumba etc. Using a walking app like "runkeeper" and going on a walk everyday will also help. I also log all my food in myfitnesspal. Honestly, if exercising were easy everyone would do it. Join a running club that will keep you accountable (H is doing this as well as going on walks with his co workers during lunch)
Honestly, you kinda of gotta want to make time for it. Our schedules are super busy (full time jobs, 2 standing appointments every week after work). Working out is great "me time", with the stress relief and everything else.
I personally love going to the gym. I have gone just to run/walk on the treadmill for 20 min, or use the elliptical for 20 min. Because that's all the time I had.
You can always do a DVD program like p90x or insanity if that works for you. The time commitment isn't crazy.

When I first started out, I used the Wii Fit - it was a decent workout for a beginner! I did mostly the strength section. The sensors help you learn to do lunges/squats with good form.
I also walked a couple nights a week until it got too hot out, then I got a hand-me-down elliptical and jumped on there after dinner while catching up on the DVR.
