With the Camille/Talayna match up everyone I know is thinking pull-ups. I just hope they aren't chest-to-bar...I would like to get past the 2nd workout before I get to something I just can't do at all :/
Also, I'd really like to see a chipper in the Open.
They are (usually) all AMRAP because it's easier to score/break ties, etc.
I would like to see them do something with heavy weight, like actual heavy weight. In the last few years, none of the open workouts have done this - and then you get people at regionals who cannot do the weights of some of the regional workouts - which sucks for them AND for the people who don't make the cut who have that ability - because it was never "tested" in the Open. **steps off soapbox**

Oooh, a chipper would be fun! But slightly more complicated to score.
suzyp, I did not follow the Regionals at all last year (or ever before), and it surprises me that people would qualify via the Open without also having the strength portion. Obviously some people are more focused on speed and other skills, but I guess I just assumed that if you're one of the top 60 people in your region at burpees and box jumps and all that jazz you can probably also kick my ass lifting heavy things. Selfishly I would be sad with an Open WOD that immediately went to heavy weight because I can't do it, but if it then affects regionals I do see your point.
Does anyone know if the athletes for the other announcements have been chosen? I have tickets to 14.4 and I'm dying to know who it's going to be. It's at Rory Zambard's home box so I'm assuming she'll be one of the athletes, but I can't wait two more weeks to find out who it's going to be!

Unfortunately, I cannot provide you with any examples. Basically, the Open WODs have a large concentration on body weight exercises, or lifting with a cardio component. Like 14.1, the weight for the snatch was pretty light (for Games' competitors skill set). As a result, this benefited someone who has the cardio capacity to lift a 95# snatch 30 times rather fast. Many of the Open WODs are similar - even the "heavy" weighted WODs are not all that heavy. I just find that the Open WODs don't have enough diversity (cannot think of the right word) in them - they are more geared towards people that are lighter lifters who have cardio capacity rather than the fit guy who can lift a shitload. I know there have been times at the Regionals and Games that the WOD involves a very heavy weight that the competitor cannot lift - much less lift more than once. I'm not talking Rich Froning here, but some of the other competitors - I think it may happen more with women than men.
I am biased - my coach (who has been to the Games 2 or 3 times) is ridiculously strong, but he's a bigger guy, so while he's competitive in things like HSPUs, etc., his strength is in his, well, strength and that does not get tested in the Open WODs.
suzyp - I saw that at Central East last year with one girl in particular (I don't remember her name, but I remember that she was wearing a workout skirt haha). She couldn't clean 125#, which I thought was pretty concerning for a Regionals-level athlete.

suzyp that all totally makes sense, and I agree that it's clear the Open favors cardio over strength. But wambam's example surprises me - I can't clean 125 lb yet, but I'm about 99.99999% sure that if I trained enough to get my other skills to a Regional level, I'd be cleaning 125 lb relatively easily!
I saw a blog post the other day criticizing the fact that the Open tries to be both an all-inclusive event and something that weeds out all but the top athletes. For the former, they need to keep weights low, not do events that require a bunch of equipment that people who aren't at a box don't have, and take into account ease of scoring since there are so many athletes, but for the latter they would ideally include more movements to test different skills of top athletes working out with full equipment.

I think the way the Open was born, it's intended to be inclusive. People do it in their garages, at the houses, etc., you know? Not everyone has a rower, for example.
I'm guessing burpees and pullups will make an appearance in the next workout.
Can we speculate about the Games? Last year was a clean & jerk ladder, and the previous year was a clean ladder. I'm hoping for a back squat ladder, but I know that's not likely. Would be so awesome though.
For heavy weight it will just be a ladder - there was one last year with the snatches. I don't know why but I feel an overhead squat ladder coming up…the question is what else they might pair it with…you could do an ascending/descending ladder…with toes to bar maybe?
15 overhead squats at 55lbs 3 toes to bar 12 overhead squats at 75lbs 6 toes to bar 9 overhead squats at 95lbs 9 toes to bar 6 overhead squats at 115lbs 12 toes to bar 3 overhead squats at 125lbs 15 toes to bar…
That probably isn't enough but you get the picture…
I find they don't to weights that require a rack - it always has to be cleaned off the floor - that's why I don't think it will be back squat. They had the deadlift last year (13.2 I believe) but the weight was static, it was the snatch that was the ladder. There has to be some sort of weight portion but the only way to make it inclusive is to do a ladder.
It could be a 15, 12, 9 - but that's an awfully short ladder - the weight would have to jump in big increments in order to allow for the newest people to play along and still challenge the big wigs.
I feel like anything featuring CLB will involve pull ups.

I agree, but I just wish they would mix up the skills in the Open a bit. I do like that they make all the regional workouts the same - they used to leave it up to the region and the WODs could vary a lot from region to region.
Admittedly, I can get a little "back in the day" with the Games - for example, I think it's complete BS that they charge people to participate - they didn't in the past - and if 100+ signed up, they are making a lot of money on it.
Any ladder would be great - that's one of my favorite things to watch. And as long as there's not some dumb softball throw, I'm fine!
If it's all mainly cardio and less about heavy weight I will absolutely will never ever qualify (not that I ever expect to). I can lift heavy but cardio is my downfall.
WOO HOO! Overhead squats - I win, lol…except I called toes to bar - even though I knew it would be pull ups because it is CLB. And it isn't a ladder in weight, just in reps.
I think I was pretty close, lol. I would NOT want to do this workout.

So, 10 reps for me then... The one effing thing I didn't want (since I figured they wouldn't do muscle ups this early), and there it is. Why can't they be normal pull ups?! I hateeverything. Mostly Dave Castro.
