For the last few weeks I've been having problems with a tooth I had a root canal on about 8 years ago. It's been throbbing and hurting. My dentist couldn't pinpoint the problem, but he said "Out With Ya!"
To make a long story short, I had a jaw infection that claimed 4 molars 7-8 years ago. Over the course of 2 years I had 6-7 root canals on those 4 teeth. Three were eventually pulled and replaced with dental implants. Love the implants! I've never had a problem with them. My dentist figured I would lose the 4th tooth within a year or two. 7 years later, it's infected and has a cracked root per the oral surgeon. No wonder it hurts! I'm having it out tomorrow. I'll have twilight anesthesia since the oral surgeon will cut it out and do a bone graft in anticipation of the implant in 8-12 weeks. It's the last molar on the upper left. There is no way I'd do this big, honkin' tooth at the way back of my tiny mouth with just Novocaine!
Hair pats and sympathy would be appreciated.
Luckily, health insurance covers a portion of the two oral surgeries and anesthesia after I meet my deductible. Dental insurance covers part of the implant and crown. I'll have to cover the rest. Does anyone want to buy some bike parts?
H had oral surgery last year, a botched root canal from 10 years ago ended up forming a huge cyst in his upper jaw that grew into his sinus. He had to have 3 teeth removed and the cyst left no upper bone between that and his sinus. It totally sucks!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I am congenitally missing two teeth, so basically all my nightmares center around teeth falling out. You poor thing.
Can I hijack for a minute to ask you about the bone graft? Have you had one before for your other implants? What was it like? I want to get implants (currently have Maryland bridges), but because I never had grown up teeth my jaw is really thin, and there was talk of bone grafts when I seriously looked at implants a couple years ago. So I did the mature thing and ran away. I'd like to eventually get implants, but I'm scared they'll say bone graft again.
OUCH. I have had my share of root canals and crowns but nothing that sounds that involved. I am so sorry. Hang in there- thank goodness for insurance (and anesthesia and pain meds).

I could have written this post.
I have three congenitally missing teeth. Two still have baby teeth. One had a Maryland bridge, which was making my teeth crooked because my bite was off. About ten years ago I decided to have the Maryland bridge replaced with an implant. Like you, I had thin bone there and needed a graft. I had graft done, then an implant done a few months later. The implant failed within a few weeks because it was not an ideal site due to the thin bone, in spite of grafting. I ended up with a cantilevered bridge this time, which is better for my bite.
If I need to replace one of my remaining baby teeth, I will definitely try an implant again, although it was pretty horrible when it didn't work out.
I was awake for the grafting, implanting, un-implanting, etc. It was pretty gnarly.
Lots of (((hugs))) and hairpats. I had jaw surgery in 2009 so I can sympathize with you. DH is a dentist so let me know if you have any dental related questions:)
That sounds so painful. I hope extracting the tooth will get rid of the pain for you. I'm glad to hear that your other dental implants have done well over the years.
P.S. I HATE spending money on stuff like that when I'd rather buy new running shoes or workout gear. Obviously money spent on health is money well spent, but I totally get where you're coming from!
Sympathy and hair pats. In the past six months I've had a root canal, two extractions and a crown so I can commiserate. Thank goodness your insurance covers a good portion of it,
Oh, man. Definitely a ton of sympathy. I have had a root canal and 4 crowns placed in the past few years and it stinks. The bill that follow stinks, too. Tons of sympathy and hair pats coming your way!
I really hope things go ok. Thinking of you! As a teen I had a root canal, then tooth removal and eventually an implant put in for the tooth just to the left of my front teeth. Luckily I had enough bone to deal with it. I was under general anesthesia too & totally recommend that.
(And I'm forever thankful to my parents for doing this for me so I don't have a giant gap in the front of my mouth.)

My wife had a bone graft done in her lower jaw a few years ago (no implant) and it went really smoothly, I hope everything goes as well for you. Here's to a speedy recovery!
