The only logical reasons I can think of would be a mold issue or foundation problem. The pictures don't indicate anything but an amazing house that I'd love to have.

That was my first thought, too. It's a gorgeous house.
Something looks strange about the bottom kitchen cupboards. Was there a flood or something maybe?
Even the very upper part of the tall cabinet to the left seems odd. There seems to be a gap. Which makes me wonder if there are foundation issues too. Just something that we can't see.
It doesn't look like it need anything done to it. How strange. My old house is in worse condition cosmetically but the bones are good. Maybe there is something structural wrong with it? IDK.

Oh man, that is beautiful. There has to be something up with it for it to be marketed as a total remodel/tear down. Sad :-( Maybe that Nicole Curtis Rehab Addict should buy it!!

I renovated a house liked that. The issue is that once you start with one thing, it snowballs into EVERYTHING. What's that? You want to redo this bathroom? Okay, well it is knob-and-tube wiring, so you need to rewire the whole house for $$$. Oh you want to fix that plumbing leak? Please fork over $$$$$ for redoing everything was done incorrectly the first time. Oh, all those beautiful windows? Completely inefficient and will cost you $$$$$ to replace, and even more if you want them to fit the architecture of the house.
I love this house and hope someone can reno it, but I can understand that in a good area that it might be a tear down.
Confession: I've become obsessed with looking at real estate listings. We aren't moving but I like to see what's out there. I searched for houses built no later than 1900 just to see what came up. :-)
I love to do this. We plan on moving in a couple of years but haven't determined the exact area we want to be in. I look trying to figure out if houses actually exist that meet our minimum requirements. Having full access to MLS makes it even more an obsession.
It's a beautiful house from the outside, but clearly needs work inside. Only 1 bathroom, radiator heat - probably no easy way to put in A/C, kitchen needs to be redone. Maybe after tallying all that up, it's cheaper/easier just to tear down and build your own.

Maybe cheaper/easier to tear down..but....but.....it would be far uglier with no character. :-P
If I had the money I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat! I'm of the school of thought that houses like this need to be saved and brought back to life.
Apparently my great grandfather actually built a bunch of the houses that look like that, somewhere in Mpls. Interesting fact!

What they'll do (just like they do in a lot of the Summit Ave houses) is they gut the entire house and start back up. They leave the bones but reno everything inside down to the piping and electrical.
I'm sure they can leave plenty of character.
Or not.
And really, if you live in Lake of the Isles and DON'T have forced air for central a/c, you're crazy!

Drool. I'm obsessed with tiny old fashioned pantries.
Our first house was the definition of a "starter home" and had a lot of things I didn't love about it but since it was by far the nicest in our price range at the time, we bought it. It was built in 1917 and hadn't had any updates since probably the 1970's.
But the ONE thing it did have that I still miss is a cool pantry like this. Same dark wood, built-ins with glass fronts, counter space at the end. Original "potato bins" (which I had no idea what they were but I was told that is what they were), which I can see in this pic too. So neat!
With it being in Kenwood I would guess they expect the buyer to want to start over. Maybe they want a bidding war over the lot and the house is just secondary/incidental.

You're right about the kitchen at floor level, but right in the next room, those gorgeous inlaid hardwood floors - That's exactly what I want to do! I wish there were more pictures of that floor! I wonder if they're going to put up a mcmansion? Half a million for a teardown doesn't make sense to me, except that it's on the water.

But why not just gut the inside, and keep that beautiful exterior? So much character, which you'll never get with new construction.

Yeah, look at the bottom left-hand corner of the tall cabinet on the left (where it meets the floor), and the water streaking on the cabinets under the sink.
Also, despite its wonderful bones, this is one of the most boring-ly decorated houses ever. Allll light wood and neutrals.
