I was reading an interesting theory on this last night that pulled the story together using this theory...but built onto it. There has to be more than just this theory because the creators say the end is heartbreaking and wonderful and some other positive word.
But one thing that is not a spoiler is that SOMETHING sad is going to happen.

I think something sad has to happen! I'm ok with something sad - but just not this theory. No. I don't like it and I think it's an "easy" way out. So to speak.

If the "wonderful" thing is that they stick Ted and Robin together in the end, I'm going to be so pissed.
RIGHT! Ugh. How predictable would that be?
I don't think this will happen though - since we see all of them old. I honestly don't think old Barney and Ted would hang if Robin divorced Barney to marry Ted.
My H just said that he read a theory that Ted has Alzheimers and that the story being told is from letters he wrote through the years to help him remember.

This has already been done. It was called The Notebook.

Wouldn't he be a little young in 2030 for that?
Not for early onset Alzheimer's which typically appears around age 50 which given that he is in his 30s now would fit time wise. don't think that is it but it's not impossible.
You know, I know people were not pleased that the entire season takes place over this one weekend, but this was actually a smart move. It has allowed them to do all these flash forwards so you are not left with all these loose ends, wondering what happened to these characters.
I read somewhere that they wouldn't end on a sad note because it would leave a bad taste in fans' mouths and hurt syndication. Who knows if that is taken into account, but I'm just holding out hope that they end it on a good note.

I will cry if the mom dies though.
I didn't think I'd like that it was taking place over one weekend, but I do! I was surprised, they've made it work! There are enough flashbacks and flashforwards that it works.
I don't think Ted dies, they've shown him old (like, old old) at least once.

I'm getting more and more irritated that I've invested all this time on the show only to be "rewarded" with this crappy final season and now likely a sad ending. Grrrr.
That was one of the theories, but something that others pointed out is the different way that Ted talks about Barney and Robin. More like the kids know Robin really well but kinda like they haven't spent much time with Barney. Maybe Barney died?
I'm thinking Barney dying is a very real (sad) possibility. Ted talks about Uncle Marshall and Uncle Barney very differently. It would also explain Barney's over the top personality, as people who have passed away are often glorified/memories are exaggerated.
The mom missing a wedding, it could be as simple as The Mom's mom passing away before their wedding.
I think there are two kinds of HIMYM fans...Ted Haters and Ted Supporters. I'm not sure they'll be able to end the show in a way that keeps all fans happy.

How could anyone hate Ted??
(To be fair....I'm married to a sorta dorky architect named Ted...so.....)
CHA-MA-LAY-ON FOREVER!
YOU'RE MARRIED TO TED!? .......... ARE YOU THE MOTHER!?

That would definitely be a twist if Barney died. Ted Supporter here, but I can't stand Barney. Your theory makes sense esp the part about memories being exaggerated.
Well, sometimes Ted says stupid stuff. It wouldn't surprise me.
My vote (different from what I want to happen) is that The Mother & Barney both die and the final episode is Ted and Robin rekindling their love for each other through their mutual grief.
Cue Ted Haters: I'm SO PISSED! I hate Ted. Too predictable! (Well, aside from Barney stuff.)
Cue Ted Supporters: Aww. Ted is just so happy when he's with Robin. I'm sad the mom died, but they were always meant to be together!
I've kind of enjoyed this season, much more than last season! We have watched seasons 1-5 (before it started going downhill) several times. I've enjoyed watching the writers tie up loose strings and bring up & explain tiny little details from previous episodes, like Big Fudge. Granted DH often has to remind me what they are, since I forget a lot of the details.
