I am ordering a new one today because we finally got a king sized bed. I have always had down comforters but I am considering down alternative because my sister said that she can't really tell the difference and it is much less expensive. Does anyone have opinions on one vs. the other?
I prefer down. It is lightweight and breathable. I bought a pacific coast one last time and have had no loose feathers or bunching and it claims to be allergen free? I don't know, I don't have allergy issues.
We had an alternative down when we first got married and it made me sweat so much.

I have both. The down is washable as long as you make sure it completely dries out. So it takes a little more effort in that sense. It's also a pacific whatever brand. I've never had one feather come out of it. It was pricey, though, which I recommend. Better quality down feathers and better quality material to hold them. It is about 10 years old and it had held up so, so well. Always fluffy and beautiful.
Having said all this, I prefer the down alternative for sleeping. It's a thinner comforter so it's more breathable for us and it's incredibly easy to wash and dry.
I wash my down comforters and jackets all the time. Invest in decent quality and you'll be happy. Pacific Coast is decent quality (I have a couple of their pillows), Company Store sells some wonderful down. DS bought a new down comforter at Ikea this fall and it's held up nicely.
