I've just started doing this with running and biking and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I basically get my HR up as high as I can for two minutes then get it back down for one minutes, then back up for two and so on. Is this correct? Is there something I'm missing? Info online is all over the place.
I really like the Spartacus hiit weight training circuit. Most of my HIIT training is done with weights, but if you're looking for strictly cardio, I have a few stair climber HITTs I like. I also do the Tone it up Treadmill HIIT when I'm in a rut.

What kind of equipment are you using?
I'm just doing it with running and biking. I'm doing it at my gym.
I remember someone on here saying that running at the same speed for 40 minutes isn't nearly as effective as HIIT running so I'm just concentrating on cardio right now. I do weights at home before going to the gym.
I think you'll like the tone it up treadmill workout then. When I first started doing to, I couldn't do the incline--it was too hard. Over time I started adding in the incline as much as I could and still finish the workout. I can do the whole workout now, and OMG it kicks my ass every.single.time. I usually burn around 300 calories, and its nice knowing that I'm still burning calories after I finish.
Anywho, I have a few other treadmill and stair climber, and some body weight circuit HIITs if you want them.
H got me doing "Mr Shut Up and Train" workouts after he made this cute couple's routine. I was hooked after that. He has some dumbbell workouts, body weight, and medicine ball stuff. His site is: www.mrshutupandtrain.com/category/fitness-tv/
I've done some Ashley Horner and Jamie Eason workouts I've seen on Bodybuilding.com, too. I'll tailor them to my needs and go from there.
ETA: Looks like he made his videos private. What a douche!

How do you do it?
Sometimes I'll do sprints on the treadmill to break it up (I HATE the tm and only use it if there is snow/ice and I'm training for something). I don't do normal HIIT on machines though, and I think it could get really boring really fast.
I do HIIT by doing total body strength moves that force me to engage my core, and pump on the cardiovascular intensity. I create 3-4 circuits and repeat each twice in my typical strength/cardio/core classes.
Think moves like: burpees, squat jumps, lunge switch jumps, etc. I put more strength (less cardio) moves in between like alt lunges with bicep curls, plank row, etc. The strength moves still engage and use total body. Don't waste time isolating one group like bicep, quad, etc.
I don't use machines for any cardio; I do body weight exercise, kettle bells, med balls, and ropes. But IMO, to do HIIT right, you need to be going so hard on the "on," that you need more time off. So I'll choose an interval from 30" to 2', but my rest interval is almost always 1.5 to 2x the work interval.
This is not true, by the way, if I'm doing mulitiple full body exercise-- that's cardio, but not technically HIIT.
