I have the same issue. My period only lasts for 2ish days but the clots are brutal. I have no idea about the cause. Always just figured that it's an aging/hormone thing.
Clots are normal. I think they said as long as they are smaller than a quarter it's nothing to worry about. I get them all the time and I have never had an issue using tampons. I find they actually are more effective that pads. Like others said, just make sure you change them frequently
I have an amazingly light flow for most of my period, in that I use 2 tampons and one pantyliner per month, but I clot a lot. Even with the tampon in I generally pass a clot or two when I'm peeing but never any other time, when I change / remove the tampon there are usually some clots following or attached to it. I don't feel like I have a backup of any kind.
Clots are pretty standard and normal. Are they unusually large or anything?
good to hear. So I don't think they are unusually large however when I was younger, I did not have them to this extent at all. Now I have almost no blood loss on a pad. I'd say 95% of my period just comes out at pee time in form of clots. So I'm wondering if I wear a tampon, is this going to possibly cause backup? I realize this is a silly question LOL!
Have you been on hormonal BC for a long time? I ask because this happened to me gradually over period of years, to the point that I didn't realize how much my period had changed, and I thought it was attibuted to BC. However, it continued on even after I had stopped BC.
Then I got sick with Celiac and started seeing a naturopath for help (if you believe in that sort of thing, I like a natural approach, however I wouldn't trust just any of them. Naturopathy is heavily regulated in my province) and in the course of health discussions, she asked me about my flow and I told her it was very little flow and mostly clots.
She told me that period changes like clots over a period of time could be indicative of a food allergy/intolerance, or other health concern and that its really "more normal" to have blood, than to pass just clots. Once I figured out all my health issues, and stopped eating foods I was intolerant to, I noticed a big change in my flow. I went back to more blood, less clots. I still get clots, but I’d say the flow seems more like mostly blood with some clots.
This is not at all to say this is the cause for you, but the advice from the naturopath turned out to be accurate in my case.
As long as you don't fling clots out of your vag when you take your tampon out and they manage to hit your underwear, the bathroom rug and the bathroom floor, then KOKO.
