I have no business posting on his board, but this post is too awesome not to. I have some old man friends and they are a true joy. My best one died last year and I miss him so much. The guy you met sounds like he is of the same vein, the awesome vein. Nice of you to pay the bill.
That story made me teary! Not enough people in the world are truly kind to one another, and it sounds like each of you had a nice brunch with a very kind stranger today. How wonderful.
Random acts of kindness are the best. We were stressed the other day because our train was late, and we were bickering over nonsense because of it. The guy in front of us in line picked up on it, and randomly paid for our drinks. It was so unexpected and completely out of nowhere! In addition to our own thanks, I wish he knew how many people around the world "liked" it when I explained it on Facebook!
I ended up going to this really popular little brunch joint, and since they were busy I sat at the bar with an open spot next to me. A little old dude sits next to me - he had to have been at least 75. He is really nice and friendly and we get to chatting. With my hair & tats, I am always really touched when older generation folks are warm and receptive to me since many are not.
Turns out he is still an active Associated Press photographer so we got to chatting about photography. He still shoots film, I showed him my film camera tattoo and he loved it. Then he proclaimed "I am going to go get my SpeedOMatic tattooed on my bum now!" It was hilarious.
He said Charlize Theron is lovely and that he loves his job. It was just a wonderful conversation. So when he was looking away, I paid for his bill. Before I left I let him know "It was great chatting with you today - I went ahead and took care of your bill for you." And OMG the shock on his face was priceless, guys. "Now, why would you do that?! That's just wonderful. Oh my gosh." And he kissed me on the cheek.
