"The state, as James Carville noted, is basically Philadelphia and Pittsburg with Alabama in the middle."
And I don't remember hearing about this!
"Gordon Denlinger (R): Proposed a new amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution that would make it legal for business to discriminate based on race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or anything else based on the business owner's religious views. Calling Jim Crow! Jan Brewer in Arizona didn't even sign that bill, but what Denlinger is proposing is even worse than a bill. He hasn't written his amendment yet, but he strategically put out a press release on MLK day announcing his intentions."

I have heard that quote, or one similar before. We call that zone pensyltucky.
Yeah, our area is normal and stuff, but god there's a large swath of... I don't even know. And I feel like the state legislature is gerrymandered in a way that people who believe the earth is 6000 years old and that we don't need school lunch programs and that the gays have an agenda really get a disproportionate amount of sway. (And I know approximately 0 about the politics of Pittsburgh, other than populous areas tend to be more Dem/liberal, but if it goes the way of other blue collar manufacturing areas, the Reps *could* convert a lot of people who used to be Dem in order to be pro-union, but are really comfortable voting for socially conservative policies.)

I heard it was like a mini-US with the liberal coasts (Pittsburgh & Philly) and the conservative middle.
I grew up in the "Alabama" part of PA. Remember the town where the school board was trying to add intelligent design to the science classes? That's my hometown. Scary.
As a resident of Pennsyltucky or Pennsabama, I sadly know how bad it is. Too many damn rednecks, guns and confederate flags. Obama had it right, guns and bibles. There are still some of us college educated tree-hugging bleeding heart liberals here among the sea of red.
The things that my coworkers think they can say because they think they are in like-minded company are astonishing. I have called them out on it.

My brother's godparents used to live in SW PA and the Confederate flags really slayed them. People were all, "Oh, you're from New York state? Well, you're in the south now!" Huh?!

LOL! The only place I have actually seen a confederate flag flying (and I have lived in Florida and NC) is in upstate NY! I also see them all over trucks, hats, and belt buckles. Way more here than I ever saw down there.

Ha, yes! I grew up in western NY and there's rednecks with the Confederate flag flying all over. Hey guys, if you want to pretend you're Southern, move south.

I have lived here my entire life and I've never been to the center of the state. I guess there's a reason why! But seriously, there are a lot of normal Republicans. I know some and I was/am one, sort of. Yet, they seem like a dying breed based on everything I read and hear these days. *sigh*
