OK so after my prescription was up I switched to a new pharmacy and got my refill today. I have never used the retractable syringes before and today I injected myself and while I was finishing I was like hmm this doesn't seem like as much in the actual syringe as usual-yet I pushed it all the way down- or so I thought. When I removed the syringe I pushed hard on it and some of the medicine comes flying out of the syringe and then the needle retracts. WTF am I an idiot? I know I pushed all the way. Please tell me someone else has had this happen.
The lovenox syringes I have experience with at work require you to inject the medication as usual and then once removed from your abdomen pressing even harder on the plunger to activate a cap that covers the needle as a safety feature. This is the only type of Lovenox syringe I have any experience with. The retractable needle sounds like the same type of safety mechanism and it could be that as you pushed down harder on the plunger that anything left in the needle that didn't come out as you injected is what you saw coming out of the needle. The ones I use have an air bubble in the syringe to make sure that the entire dose is administered and nothing is left in the needle, maybe yours doesn't come this way? I don't know that this really answers your question but hopefully is helpful in some way.

Same exact thing happened to me after I switched pharmacies. The first 3 or so times I wasn't getting all meds bc it would still come shooting after I thought I was done injecting. Now I push down all the way until needle retracts when it's in me. I don't know if its what I'm supposed to do but it doesn't hurt, just scared me at first. Otherwise I wasn't getting all the meds!

Ok I was going to also add should it retract when it's in you? Lol alright now I don't feel alone. Does it hurt more to let it retract while inserted?
Me! I think I have the same kind as you? Mine has a sleeve that pops down if you push hard on the plunger. But you have to push really hard and the pop is fast - I wouldn't do it with the needle still in me.
Are you injecting the air bubble in the syringe? Most meds you're not supposed to inject it - but you are supposed to with lovenox from what I understand. I tap the syringe until the air bubble is at the top of the needle before I inject. The air bubble goes in last when I'm injecting. I've found doing it that way results in very, very little to none of the med coming out when I push the plunger to activate the safety sleeve.
Does that make sense?
bowies and litasail - I think they did/are doing lovenox too.

I don't know if its supposed to retract when it's in you but it doesn't Hurt...maybe I can ask doctor and pharmacist next time I go...
Yeah the pharmacist told me to come in tomorrow and show her how I'm doing it. It was much easier with the non retractable bc I could see the air bubble and all of the liquid

I never did it while it was in me. I had to push really hard to get the cover to pop out; I wasn't doing that with a needle stuck in my belly. Just a little of the medicine would be left and come out, but it came out so quickly it was surprising the first time.

Weren't there instructions in the box?
Yes but I wasn't expecting so much to come out when popped the syringe after injecting. I will try again tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for all the replies!
