I'm not sure I am much help. My DD will be 10 months this weekend. I keep getting age-appropriate toys out for her but she shuns them all in favor of her big brother's toys (almost 3 yrs old).
She does enjoy her Vtech activity walker toy a lot, though. Oh, and her Munchkin Mozart Music Cube.
DS is very into putting things into containers. So blocks and boxes are hits. Clothes and laundry baskets lol. And anything that the 3.5 year old plays with. Also, and this probably makes me a bad mom, but he loves playing with his brother's Melissa and Doug letter magnets and sticking them on the fridge. I try to pull out the tiny ones.
DS is 14 months and seems to prefer things that are NOT his toys. Like a paper bag to put his blocks and balls in. He also has a drawer in our kitchen with some tupperware and some measuring cups and spoons that I got at the $ store.
We also have the ball popper that carolinagirl831 posted, and DD is a big fan (my parents have one at their house, too, and my 5 y.o. niece and nephew still play with it occasionally).
Other favorites including stacking cups or blocks (she likes when we stack them up so she can knock them down), Melissa & Doug puzzles, fridge magnets, tupperware, and crayons (although we just started using those around 13m).
DD was obsessed with a giant toy and vanity set at that age, not what you're looking for, I'm sure
I thought this was a hard age for toys, if that helps at all. It will get easier soon. She was too old for baby-baby toys but not old enough to really enjoy lots of other toys. She did enjoy music and instruments, so the Parum Pum drum from Target worked nicely.
@ojo reminds me, classic toys. She did really enjoy her ring stacker and shape sorter at that age.

Do you have any kind of activty walker? We have two walk behind ones and one regular table but her favorite thing is to push these around. That and pushing around kitchen chairs, trash can etc. She is always on the move and does much less sitting and playing with toys. I need to get one of those tunnels!
Books are getting better at keeping her attention too. Also bubbles outside are a hit. Fubbles are great no spill bubbles.
