But the first 6 weeks or so were godawful. The spotting was annoying but managable. It was the constant irritability and bitchiness that nearly caused me to shank some small children. Everything anyone did made me want to hurt people and hurt them hard.
But that faded and now I just get cranky for a day or so around the time AF would appear.

I have the mirena and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I had it put in 6 months after having DD and it was not painful at all. I have had less than a dozen periods in the 3 years I have had it, and very little spotting. I spotted for maybe a week after having it put in.
You'll find that people who have them and have them work properly LOVE them.
Mirena was not good for me. I was really disappointed. I'll spare you the sordid details, but I had it in for 3 months. I bled nearly every day (not spotting, bleeding). Then it tried to eject itself.

I had the Mirena inserted last September, and I love it. The only crappy part was the 6 weeks of spotting that followed. I only had one light period in November, and haven't had a period since then which is awesome. I haven't had any other side effects like weight gain. I only had to pay for my co-pay at the doctor and insurance covered the rest. I don't have any kids yet and insertion did hurt for about a minute, but it was fine afterwards. I will get it out in the next year or two when we decide to have a kid, and I plan on having another one inserted after we have a kid.
I have the Paragard copper/hormone free one and I love it. Reliable (as long as you check the strings, cause mine dislodged out of place one time, talk about panic!), no hormones, cycle naturally. The only thing I don't like is that I have one day of very heavy period and cramping. Although I've always been on BCP so I have no idea if that is my natural cycle or not.

I have the mirena. I am actually getting it replaced in a couple of weeks, as my five years are up. I don't have periods, which is great since they were always very heavy with unspeakable cramping. And I also haven't gotten pregnant, so I think thats a win.

I have the paragard. I love that it is not hormonal and when we wan to try again I just get it out and we're good to go. I had a bit of spotting, but I get it 8 weeks PP so it was not a big deal.
I've only had one period on it, and that was like my regular pre-preg period, so I can't say much about that.
