Calvin has a cyst that comes and goes. It's pretty uncomfortable when it flares up (enough that he doesn't want to hike or run), but that doesn't happen super often and in the long run it's NBD and his doctor is fine with leaving it alone.
Don't read the Internet! Signed, a Google hypochondriac.
In all seriousness, though, many years ago my H had a lump down there and it ended up being nothing. Never went to the doc for it, it just went away on it's own, so likely a cyst/lymph node or something. This was nearly 10 years ago.
I understand how stressful it is. Just try not to worry too much.

Is it at all visible? Or can he feel a lump?
No solid lump, just localized swelling that would really hurt if I poked too hard at it.

My husband had a twisted testicle when he hit puberty that he had to have surgery on. His brother had the same thing, waited too long to tell someone and lost the testicle.
So, he's a little sensitive about his testicles. One day a couple years ago, they started to hurt. It sounded like the same sort of thing you were talking about - he wasn't doubled over in pain but he was uncomfortable. When the pain didn't subside, we went to the ER (it was a weekend and we were out of town, otherwise we probably would have just tried to see his doc that day). They did an ultrasound and found that the testicle was inflamed and had extra fluid on it. They weren't sure what caused the inflammation, but they gave him a round of antibiotics and he felt better.
I'd be mildly concerned about impending torsion. Seeing a doc is definitely a good call.
I read some about this, and I didn't realize their might be feeling associated with impending torsion. I only seemed to read about torsion in the sense of sudden onset of severe pain.
It usually does - essentially, the blood supply gets cut off. I don't know that it's particularly likely, but I think getting it checked out would be a good idea.
Good news from the doc. Looks like epididymitis (inflammation in the 'works' behind the testicle) that will likely (and may be already) self-resolving. If it gets worse or not better over the next week she'll do bloodwork and an ultrasound. So nothing scary and hopefully nothing at all.
