I'm going to be on the hunt for new shoes this weekend, I ended up all rubbed funny and bad shin soreness after Napa (and before) so I think my current kicks just aren't working. It made me realize though, that the more you run, the more you realize different things when you try on shoes.
What shoes are you rockin?
How did you hear about them?
What made you choose them?
Are you brand loyal?
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes?
I wear Mizuno Wave Inspires. I'm on the 9's and am being forced into the 10's. I was fitted for them about 5 years ago at my LRS and have been mostly loyal since. The two times i switched, I had achilles issues. The offenders were Mizuno Elixers (lighter weight) and Brooks. I haven't been fitted in 5 years, and really hope i don't have to be soon. Crossing fingers that the 10's are good to me.
I'm in Mizuno Wave Inspires, too. I was fitted for them when I first started running regularly (before then I wore whatever was cute ). After I lost all of my pregnancy weight, I got fitted again to be sure, and they were the star again. I haven't dealt with injuries in the last few years, so there's no way I want to test anything else out. I could care less about brand, etc, I just want the shoes that fit my feet.
What shoes are you rockin? Saucany Ride 5/ Adidas Adizero Adios (racing)
How did you hear about them? Saucany - Got fitted at local running store, had a gc from a race. Adizero - Mr GT
What made you choose them? Got fitted at local running store, had a gc from a race. Adizero - Mr GT was convinced I needed racing flats, but I wasn't quite ready to go all the way.
Are you brand loyal? Nope, but I like that I can find the Ride 5s on sale.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Hmmm, I don't even really know.

I wear Mizuno Wave Ascend 6s - they're a trail shoe but they're so comfortable I wear them for everything. I've been a Mizuno shoe wearer for decades, so when I started trail running, my LRS recommended these and set me up in them and I've been in love ever since.
When I try on, I'm paying attention to whether my toes have enough room, width-wise. Even some brands' wide shoes just aren't shaped right for my fred flintstone feet.
ETA: I also have a pair of Merrell Pace Gloves. I love them, but because of my flintstone feet, I can't wear them with socks. So I don't wear them for running, because if I get a little dirt in there (and I somehow ALWAYS DO) I wind up with the blister that ate new york. However, they're easily the most comfortable shoes I own and I could wear them all day every day - including standing up all day - without any pain or foot fatigue whatsoever. I always wear them when I volunteer at triathlons because that's a LONG day of standing.
(This is my 2nd pair. I have 2 more hoarded in the closet because I have tried the 15s and don't like them as well. I blame the 15s for my achilles issues this fall.)
How did you hear about them? Fitted for them at LRS (2 pairs ago)
What made you choose them? They had more curve to the footbed than others that I tried on, and it felt like my foot stayed where it belonged better.
Are you brand loyal? Nope.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Hmm. It's one of those "it just feels right" things I guess. I like plush rides, and for my foot not to slide at all. The right balance between room for my foot to swell (in the places where it does swell) in heat and on long runs, but not too much room. The arch being in the right spot, front to back. My narrow heels not slipping.
I'm in the Brooks Pureflow 3 after hearing clseale and shelbyann (I think) talk about them. I wear them with the superfeet green orthotic for a little extra arch support. I like that they are a lot lighter than the Asics Cumulus that I had been in for a while. I am not brand loyal at all. When I'm trying on, it's mainly just if they generally feel good - I don't pay attention to too many specifics.
As stated above by Runaways, I'm in Brooks Pureflow 3s. I like them enough. I still don't have the same love as I did for the 1s, but I do like them, and they are MUCH better than the 2s. I also have a pair of Saucony Kinvaras in rotation. I am not brand loyal in the least.
Has anyone tried Altras? The wide toe box intrigues me.
How did you hear about them? I've been wearing them since the first version came out a couple of years ago. I was working at a running store at the time so I heard/knew about all of the latest shoes.
What made you choose them? Light weight, decent cushion, lower heel drop helped my achilles issues
Are you brand loyal? I would say that 75% of my shoes have been Brooks over the last few years, but I'm always up for trying something new.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Fit, weight, amount of cushion, sufficient room in the toe box to allow for swelling on long runs, rubbing (or lack thereof) around the heel and collar

What shoes are you rockin? Brooks PureCadence 3 (since last Saturday!)
How did you hear about them? Recommended at the LRS where I got fitted.
What made you choose them? DH and PT highly recommended I get refitted since I broke my foot.Tried these and the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s. I loved how light the Mizunos were (and the pretty color), but the arch support seemed to hit at the back of my arch. Brooks had a much better arch support and just seemed to fit better. I might still try the Mizunos if I can find a really good deal on last year's or something. The Brooks are a stability shoe and I haven't been put in those before.
Are you brand loyal? Until now I've only run in Newtons, which were the first brand that I was fitted in. I love Newtons but I was always a little unsure if they were really the right shoe for me. Especially after I learned that the 2 stores that fitted me in them have sales quotas with Newton.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? This time I was looking for good arch support and I don't know, to make sure they felt right?

What shoes are you rockin?
Brooks Adrenaline 13s
How did you hear about them?
LRS
What made you choose them?
After Asics discontinued my shoe again, I went in to get fitted. I liked the Brooks way more than other pairs of Asics and Sauconys that I tried.
Are you brand loyal?
Nope. I'm more interested in a good fit.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes?
After I switched to Brooks, I realized that the blisters I was getting from my Asics that I just assumed was a normal part of running longer distances isn't normal at all. I don't need body glide on my feet now at all, so now I feel like I know the fit I'm looking for.
I originally was brand specific to New Balance. I got fitted at LRS and wore NB for the first 1 1/2 years of running. This past fall I went back to LRS store to get another pair. After reviewing my shoes and running pattern, they thought I was over supported and cushioned. They switched me to Mizuno Wave Inspire 9. I like them. They took me a bit to get used to. I am training for a 10K now and all is good.
I was originally fitted for the Wave Creations at a LRS because I loved the extra cushion when I first started running but after a while I dropped down to the Riders b/c they are lighter and I don't need the cushion.
I like Mizuno b/c they fit high arches and that's what I have.
I am very brand loyal. Haven't strayed in over 6 years.
I have Mizuno Ascends for trails and adventure races and those are pretty awesome too
As stated above by Runaways, I'm in Brooks Pureflow 3s.
I tried on the Altras before my last purchase and liked them a lot, but I wasn't in the right stage (recovery from broken foot) to be trying something like that. They are definitely on my list to try this time

What shoes are you rockin? - Brooks Glycerin 11's
How did you hear about them? - I was on shoe #4 in the hunt for the right shoe, and this is what I came up with.
What made you choose them? - The toe box was wide enough to accommodate my toes so that I didn't have to get a wide shoe. They had good cushioning, which also helped.
Are you brand loyal? - This is the 4th brand I've tried, so no. However, I do like these a lot, so I will stick with them for as long as they'll have me.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? - Room in the toes, snug through the rest of the foot with enough room so that my orthodics fit right, and cushioning.
How did you hear about them? i heard of them when they discontinued the 6s
What made you choose them? They felt the best when I tried on a few pairs at my local running store
Are you brand loyal? No, I'll wear whatever works for me.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? how they feel when I try them on, but I also evaluate how they feel after a couple miles into my first run.
How did you hear about them? LRS evaluation and recommendation from a sports doc
What made you choose them? Their wider toe box
Are you brand loyal? Yes! To a fault- I have been wearing this brand/model since I first started running. I'm not sure why I don't branch out, but they work for me so I'm afraid to change.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Since I'm so loyal, the brand/model.
I really want to branch out into another brand or style- all the pretty fun looking shoes make me feel like an old lady wearing orthopedic shoes- darn feet problems!
What shoes are you rockin? Brooks Trance 12s How did you hear about them? LRS recommended them after mapping my messed up feet. What made you choose them? I had been wearing New Balance but had been getting shin splints. As soon as I tried the Brooks, my shins felt better and my foot felt more supported. Are you brand loyal? Yup. They're discontinuing the Trances (I have a backup pair already. Having trouble finding more in my size.) I'm planning to switch either to the Adrenalines or the Transcends - assuming they feel good, obviously. I've heard great things about both.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Support and if I have any aches and pains. I've learned that if I have aches and pains the first time, I'll continue to have them.
I rotate between inspires and brooks cadences. I tries the cadences on a whim and love them. It's clear I'm not brand loyal since I alternate between mizunos and brooks. Well maybe I'm loyal to 2 brands. I would love to try hokas. They are a little steep price wise just to try though.
What shoes are you rockin? Brooks ghost 4. I'm on my last pair of 4's since I have been a crazy creepy shoe hoarder.
How did you hear about them? I tried them out after four failed shoe attempts. Actually, I think shelbyann might have been rocking them at the time.
What made you choose them? I could wear them right out of the box with no break in period. Nice wide toe box, but snug in the heel. Didn't feel like I was sticking my foot into a pillow, but wasn't hard as a rock either. They just work.
Are you brand loyal? Not on purpose. I freaking love my ghosts and I will buy them forever and ever unless they do an update that ruins them. I'm fine with dabbling in other shoes for funsies, but for my everyday trainers, I don't mess with success.
What do you pay attention to when you are trying on shoes? Fit - no heel slipping, lots of room in the toebox, not too overly cushy, not too minimalist but not too much support either.
