we are going to Victoria this summer. I am starting to look at hotels but didn't know what part of the island is best. Is it good to stay near the inner harbor?
We have a 2 year old with food allergies so I need a place with a kitchenette. I also would like to be able to walk from the hotel so we dont have to drive everywhere. I know the gardens are far but we would drive there one day.
any advice from people who have been or live near by?

Definitely stay near the inner harbor. There's lots to do within walking distance and it's a fun city to walk around and explore. High tea at the Empress is a fun experience if you're into that kind of thing. Your two year old will probably like watching the planes take off from the harbor. The science museum there is really nice for a rainy day and there's an IMAX theater there too. We had an awesome time renting mopeds and driving along the coast, but that's probably not feasible unless you've got someone who is willing to stay behind with your kid I can't remember the names of any specific restaurants we went to, but there are lots of good choices right in the downtown area. Have fun!

thanks for all that! We decided to invite the inlaws along so we might get to go out to dinner one night in shifts. I'm looking forward to it. I decided to book today at the Best Western (Plus) Inner Harbour because they had a 2 bedroom penthouse suite for 539/night. With the inlaws that is a better deal than 2 regular rooms and it's huge, with views, deck, full kitchen and 2 bedrooms/baths.
Check out Elk Lake park! The lake is beautiful, and it might be warm enough for wading and swimming. There is also a playground. It's about 30 ish minutes from downtown Victoria.

Elk Lake is lovely! But they have a goose/duck poop problem in the lake so there's swimmers itch. If you do wade just ensure you really rinse off afterwards. Beautiful flat 10k trail around the lakes (beaver and Elk lake are connected).
I did a race last year in it and everything was fine.
I took this recommendation a few years ago when we went and had a great experience too, although no upgrade. The only drawback is the seaplanes land right outside the hotel starting pretty early in the morning. It's definitely walkable to downtown and really nice.
Thanks for the advice! I'm looking forward to it. We booked the hotel in the inner harbor yesterday so that part is good. We will be there for 3 nights and will have our car with us (to go to the gardens and explore the island). We are taking the ferry over from Port Angeles and my inlaws will fly into seattle and take the Victoria clipper across.
