that aren't really too related but happened last night and I'm running them through my mind now.
So I had some insomnia Friday night. I woke up at 2am to pee and didn't fall back to sleep after. AT ALL. I was planning to take Unisom with B6 for this nausea nonsense and thought it would be good since I'm having trouble falling back to sleep anyway.
Last night I took 1/2 of a 25 mg Unisom pill (so 12.5mg) with 25 mg B6 and laid down to watch some TV. Fell asleep watching TV (like normal) and when I woke up I went upstairs and changed for bed. I didn't feel well. I was out of breath and my heart was racing. But that's not anything new, sometimes when I wake up before I'm suppose to I feel bad. But then when I tried to fall back asleep I kept jolting awake with a racing heart, jittery, and my brain was running in circles. Whenever I would doze I would have these insane "dreams" that would jolt me awake.
But, I do have anxiety with OCD so this sometimes happens. I'll have a panic attack after I fall asleep. I will wake with a fast pulse, shaking, and with my brain on overdrive producing images and cyclic thoughts that make no sense. I can't for the life of me figure out if I was having a panic attack or the Unisom was causing me to be jittery. I know I can't take NyQuil because the antihistamine in it makes me jittery and not sleepy. I believe the two antihistamines in the two drugs are similar. I could barely keep my eyes open but as soon as I would doze my brain would wake me up. So, anyone else get jittery on Unisom or is this just my messed up brain with pregnancy hormones doing this?
So my second question also happened last night. Usually when this anxiety/jittery thing happens it's best to go back to the couch and turn on the TV and distract myself until I can get my heartrate back down and hopefully my brain calms down. I laid down on my side and right either above or behind my pubic bone I felt like I had a butterfly trapped in there or a mexican jumping bean. It fluttered for about 30 seconds and then went away.
I'm 9 weeks - I know the baby is moving but is it possible to feel it this early? Or was it just gas. I had gas last night but it was just pain and big ol' farts. Nothing fluttery before or after that and it didn't really feel like that bubbling gas feeling. It was 100% different fluttering.
So while I was in the throws of a panic attack (either induced by the Unisom or my own f-ed up brain) I was now worrying that the stress I was under was causing the baby to freak out. Which I think is impossible at this point but now I'm curious.
hmmmm, so should I stop using the Unisom? I was so happy to find a fix for my insomnia and sickness. I might try it again tonight (I don't have work tomorrow so if I'm up and a mess all night not too much of a biggie). Bummer. Glad to know I'm not the only person that gets anxiety from meds that are suppose to put you to sleep.
Yeah, the feeling in my abdomen was so foreign and strange. Something I never felt before. It freaked me out (well, I was already freaked out). I looked up online if it was possible to feel movement at 9 weeks and there were so many other boards where people were saying yes. There were more "yes" responses online than "no, impossible". But again, they were all discussion boards so probably mothers mistaking gas rumbling. Its so small and all cartridge so I'm sure I can't feel anything yet.
Thats weird, im sorry. Ive been taking unisom for weeks now and always feel fine. I thought I could wean off of it last week, but nope, I felt horrible, so I'm back on it for a few more weeks I guess.
Sorry about your experience. I have heard of antihistamines causing the opposite effect (anxiety and jitters) in a small subset of the population. I wouldn't worry about it, but it sounds like you may not be able to use Unisom.
If you have chronic insomnia, talk to your doctor. Ambien is safe during pregnancy.
Which Unisom are you taking? There are different formulations. The one that should help with nausea contains doxylamine succinate, which is not an antihistamine at all. Other Unisoms do contain benadryl (which will be listed as diphenhydramine on the package). If you're taking one of those, then it could explain similarity to the jittery symptoms you get from antihistamines. Also, it won't help with your nausea.
It's doxylamine succinate and it is an antihistamine but used as a sleep aid. It's a first generation antihistamine.
I do know I don't react well to diphenhydramine at all and I'm wondering if they are similar.
If you have a history of anxiety/OCD I'd talk to your doc about better meds for you. Dunno if you are taking meds for those issues but I'd hate for you to be having a reaction with the meds combo.

Do you have a therapist now?
I've been in therapy for years. I will not take meds if I don't have to. My OCD and anxiety have lessened greatly over those years.
Yeah I was pretty sure 9 weeks was way too early! But I did a quick search online and there are so many people who say they started to feel the baby at 9 weeks. That's why I asked.
If the Unisom makes you jittery, then talk to your doctor about something else for both the nausea and the sleeping. I've taken Tylenol PM or Ambien if my insomnia gets really bad. Zofran might help with the nausea. Definitely check to make sure they won't interact with anything else you're taking.
I felt "flutters" at 10 weeks, but I'm 99% certain it was tiny muscle spasms. The baby is way too small to feel at that stage. Most people won't feel anything until 16-20 weeks, and some people not until as late as 24 weeks (a lot depends on placenta placement).
