Background: I did a lot of races last year including a marathon in November in which I used the Hansons marathon method and had great results (I highly recommend the program but it's not easy). I did two back to back half marathons in December (one on Sat and then one the following day) and felt good so I signed up for a 50k. Not surprisingly, as soon as I signed up for the race I started having sciatica type symptoms due to piriformis syndrome which I have been going to PT since January so I wasn't able to properly train for the race. My longest run was 18 miles and I was only running 3-4 days/week.
Anyways I still did my first 50k yesterday and I had SOOOOO much fun! The race was a very small race, I think only 40 people were running the 50k and it was a trail run (my 2nd trail race). The weather was good for about 2 hours, when we were under shady trees but then it got HOT (high was 84) but thankfully there was a good breeze. I had to go potty all day but there was no place for me to go because the forest service had done a lot of controlled burns so there was 1) no place to go pee and 2) ZERO shade. UGH! There were lots of hills which I was not prepared for so I did quite a bit of walking.
Aid stations were great and volunteers and fellow runners were super nice giving props as we passed each other. I met some amazing people during my run/walk and afterwards I hung out and got to talk to the fellow trail runners and have a beer. My time was right around 7 hrs (my garmin died) but considering the weather, hills and injury I am happy with that. I know if I was at the same fitness level like I was back in November I would have killed it..buuuuut it only gives me motivation to improve my time.
I would definitely do it again but will hopefully be able to train better and not be injured.
congrats! Makes me want to consider the frosty 50k near us. It's in January and on a trail. I run a fall 30k there already, so it's just *slightly* longer
Awesome job, badass!! I kind of like the idea of doing one, but can't really imagine it on any FL trails. Glad to hear you had a great experience. Congrats!!

Congratulations again!!!
Do it!!
That was exactly what I said after the marathon ....what's another 5 miles
Great work! Congratulations on a huge accomplishment. Did your sciatica pain act up any, or have you got it under control?
You give me hope that maybe I could cover 50K if I set my mind to it! So happy for you.
No it didn't surprisingly. I almost fell like 20 times and 3 of those times were really close and I thought for sure I was going to tweak it but didn't. I have an appointment today with my PT just in case and massage tomorrow.
Ugh the times just came out and they're not pretty (6:56). But they put my age wrong and if it had been correct I would have been 1st in my age group (nobody else in it...lol).
