I use Q-tips, too. All the doctors say not to, including my sister. I just don't get it. They say you might perforate your eardrum. Well, I'm careful and don't push too hard. They say you can end up pushing the wax further in. If you twist the Q-tip and swab the sides of the ear canal rather than just pushing in, that won't happen.
With Q-tips the trick is really to get it up tight along the wall of the ear canal, then swirl while still pressing against the wall. That way you don't stab anything in a painful way, and you get way more wax than you even realize is in there.
