I was just there! Yes. If you go east on Colestown Rd, you hit the Sligo Creek trail. Or you could head over to Rock Creek Park, which is really pretty.
Also, I meandered through some streets (I think Second Ave?) and found the...shit...Green Something? trail, too. Or is it Capital Crescent? Or I just ran on the major streets. Early in the morning, the lights were timed nearly perfectly and I rarely had to stop.

Howdy, neighbor. I just got back from the DTSS Whole Foods.
Sligo Creek Trail should be very close to you. It runs parallel/adjacent to the Sligo Creek Parkway, and it intersects Wayne Ave and Colesville Rd, which are fairly major streets, so you should be able to follow one of them to the trail. Depending on where you are in downtown Silver Spring, the trail is probably less than a mile away.
If you're here over the weekend, you can head over to Beach Drive, which is closed to car traffic on weekends, so people can run/bike on it. But don't go there today, because it's full of cars.
Yes! I used to live within walking distance of downtown SS. It's safe. Sligo Creek is good... I ran there yesterday and it's clear. Or you can run on 16th Street. Take Colesville Rd, turn right onto East-West Highway, and then turn left onto 16th Street.
Another SSer checking in! If you're looking for a hill, going west on East-West Highway for about 2-3 miles...and then try coming back up it. Ofph. I also love Sligo Creek trail, but I do only run it during the day.
