I teamed up with one of our local ultramarathoners (50k, 50 milers) "RL" to do the Dirty Duathlon off road Du at Blanket's Creek here in Metro Atlanta. Mountain bikers know Blanket's very well. It's one of the most popular trails by number of yearly users in the country. It was built for mountain bikers by mountain bikers (Everyone else has to get out of our way. Yeah! Usually it's the opposite; we get out of everyone else's way.) by the local IMBA chapter.
RL and I did the 2 person female division. She did the 5 mile run, and I did the 12 mile mountain bike. RL was midpack coming in from the women's wave start. 5 miles is barely her warm up! I had a good ride and was really fast through the first half as the course was rolling and bypassed some of the steeper climbs. The second half of the mountain bike portion was on the most technical trail out there. My average speed slowed, but it was still a good race pace. That trail is my favorite one. I came in with a very respectable time and was quite happy. There were 7-8 of my cycling teammates out there, and I had the 2nd fastest bike time of all of us (There were other women that were faster than me and my teammates including 1 current national mountain bike champion and 1 former national mtb champion.)
RL and I won our division! I'm thrilled! We won tshirts, medals, and our choice of Tifosi sunglasses or a gift certificate to the hair salon I go to.* She took the glasses, and I took the gift certificate.
*One of the trails at Blanket's is named after the hair salon. AFAIK, it's the only mtb trail in the country named after a hair salon. The salon (there are actually several locations) is owned by 2 brothers, who both race mountain bikes. They are huge supporters of this IMBA chapter, women mountain bikers in Atlanta, and all around great guys.
