I went on a wilderness backpacking trip when I was 16. We hiked about 10-15 miles a day for 2 weeks. We swam in Lake Michigan, but I didn't take any formal showers the whole time. The shower when we got back to camp was one of the best 15 minutes of my life.
Ohhh, I forgot about that. Could we not shower then? I can't remember.
I still showered then. I remember thinking the guidelines they provided were so weird--no drinking the water without boiling and no washing your clothes with it but it was OK to shower. Uh, OK.
SCM, yes, I had my surgery on Friday! It went pretty well. And, like you, I'm only showering every other day because you're right, it really is an ordeal! Thank goodness for DH.
rikki, I could never, ever, do a trip like that. I'm just not the camping/true roughing it type.
I was 37 weeks pregnant and my husband wouldn't let me shower Plus I remember it because the rest of Somerville was drunk, the obvious solution to no drinking water, and I couldn't indulge.

Oh, that's terrible! Those guidelines were weird, but I still showered, too. I even washed the few dishes we did use, just so we didn't have them piled up for days. (I re-washed them, though, I swear!)
I don't think I've ever gone more than a day. I also have been fortunate enough to never break anything or need surgery, so I haven't had to worry about it.
The example I can think of was flying back from India. I think we went like 2 or 3 days. But that was also compounded with lots of dirty traveling and being stuck in an airport for like 24 hours due to a snow storm in Canada. That SUCKED. All I wanted was a clean hot shower.
I went about four days when I was in the hospital after DD was born, which was truly awful because labor and delivery is just not a "clean" experience...LOL... and then in Dec. 2009 I had wrist surgery and couldn't get my cast wet for a week so I took sponge baths with my arm wrapped in a trash bag to keep it dry. Oh, it was a glorious day when that cast came off!
