We will be in Pittsburgh next week for my son's hockey tournament staying at Doubletree Greentree. Is that area safe for a run or anywhere you suggest we go for a nice 7-8 miles? We will have a car and the entire afternoon. And what other fun things should we do? Our games are early morning so we have lots of free time. Thanks!

If you are OK driving for a trail I would suggest either the Montour Trail or the Great Allegheny Passage Trail (which will put you in town close to the river for a good part). They both have websites with trail details and maps. I personally prefer the Montour Trail for easier suburban parking, but we only walk the trail, I can't speak for it's run-ability.
There are a whole bunch of things to do in the city. How old are your kids? What kind of activities do you prefer?
I agree with the Montour Trail. I've found it a little confusing to find trail heads in certain areas - but there is a map online. It looks like the closest for you would be in the Robinson Township area. It's a big shopping/retail area as well. There is a trail head at Montour Run Rd. & Cliff Mine Rd. - that is my favorite in the area. I prefer to head right from that trail head - you'll make a road crossing, then it gets more rural. I've only went a few miles that direction, but always nice & quiet.
Greentree is a generally nice location. The doubletree is in a mixed area - next to a busier residential area, and also next to a manufacturing area with a lot of businesses. If you're bringing a dog, there is a Camp Bow Wow like half a mile from there. It's great! That's all I know about the area, unfortunately.
