My best friend is 33 weeks pregnant. When she found out and went to the doctor the first time, they took blood. Apparently, there was some weird antibody in her blood, but doc said everything was fine. Over a period of time, they noticed her white blood cell count was increasing.
A couple months ago, they sent her to a hematologist because her OB didn't know what was up with her blood. They have been doing tests since. Several months ago they decided it was a "high risk" pregnancy. About 2 weeks ago, they put her on bed rest.
She is getting a bone marrow biopsy today. Her hematologist is also an oncologist, and since nothing has turned up on any of the other tests they've run, he is worried about why her blood count is so ridiculously high and what the antibody is. Obviously, she heard "bone marrow biopsy" and is assuming one thing. (Plus, they don't typically just do bone marrow draws like it's no biggie, right? I mean, they would have to have a reason and it be kind of a last resort, right?)
If it comes back positive for anything, they are planning on inducing her before the end of the month so they can start treatment. (She is due Sept 1, so baby should be fine in she is induced).
I'm so worried, and kind of freaking out. Obviously, I am calm and reassuring when I talk to her. But I was crying last night because I'm so worried it's going to be something awful. I just hope she isn't spending her first months as a new mom dealing with something shitty, ya know?
Any extra thoughts and prayers today would be appreciated.
Oh no i am so sorry. . I know it might not help much, but there are other things they look for with bone marrow biopsys. I have seen a hemotologist/oncologist for two years, because they cant figure out my counts and anemia. I know its hard not to worry, but it doesn't mean leukemia. I was worried about this as well.
I do have a friend who was diagnosed with leukemia, and they rushed her to the hospital immediately when her blood work came back from her regular dr on a holiday weekend.
I guess what im trying to say is, there is a good chance its not serious. Keeping your friend in my thoughts!!

I'm sorry they haven't been able to figure yours out, but it's good to know there are other possibilities. I'm a worrier, which doesn't help, and it's hard to think anything but leukemia ya know??
Yes, i know. I am the same way. The bone marrow biopsies could show a genetic anemia or other things. In my case it's painless i go every few months to get my blood counts checked. If they are low, i get a few rounds of infusions. It's no big deal.
I hope nothing is wrong with her, but just wanted to share it could be something other than what we all fear.
