Since having my daughter we have not used hormonal BC, only condoms. I would suggest using condoms for a good six months until you are sure of how your cycle works and when you are ovulating, how long your lp is etc. Sperm can live for upto 5 days so having unprotected sex even before you have signs of ovulation can result in a baby. There are lots of books out there educate yourself on the practice and then protect yourself until you feel you have it down pat.
One, I'm in your boat in terms of considering NFP before TTC. I'm planning on taking a class at a local hospital, and also have TCOYF. We plan on using condoms as well while we get used to it so there is no OOPS, though we are not ready to start NFP unless we realize that it could happen.

I used FAM for a year and a half to prevent pregnancy before we started TTC for #1. Now I'm back to using it again until we start TTC again. Though, to be fair, we just pull n pray during the fertile window, but we never even had a scare.

one2one.. I haven't been on Hormonal BC for 1.5 years and we are still baby free. (Be prepared for some funny looks when you go in for your pap. My doc had to repeat a couple times that I'm not on BC and we're not actively TTC).
I bought TCOYF and use the fertilityfriend.com for charting and their app. I also recommend using Condoms for at least 6 months after you stop taking/using your current BC. I've had a couple friends that got pregnant the very first cycle after stopping BC.
When I stopped my cycles were kinda crazy and even with charting my cycle ranges from 28-34 days. Once you know what signs to look for I find it very easy.
