1. Triathletes, do you usually do training rides in tri shorts or cycling shorts? Last training cycle I did most of mine in cycling shorts just because it's more comfortable (especially > 25-30 miles), but I'm wondering if I should just look harder for tri shorts that I like more?
2. Favorite brands of either tri- or cycling shorts? I like my Sugoi shorts ok, but I don't loooove them. Pearl Izumi doesn't fit me well, they seem to be for longer-torso'ed people than me (both their shorts and jerseys). Interested in trying some other brands. Any suggestions?
I love my Hincapie shorts. (Disclaimer: They sponsor my cycling team.). Castelli also makes some nice shorts. I recently won a pair at a race, and they are comfy. Look for shorts with a chamois that isn't too thick and the "modern" leg grippers that are more material and not tiny bands of grippers. The new style leg grippers are much more comfy and don't result in "Sausage Thigh."
I have a pair of hincapie cycling shorts (thanks to Sadlebred's suggestion) that are fabulous. But, since I usually run after I ride, 90% of the time I just wear tri shorts (Soas). I prefer the felt chamois.
I thought I would prefer cycling shorts for long rides during this cycle, but I did 5 hrs on Friday in my tri shorts with only the basic saddle discomfort that you would expect after that long - I don't think it would be any different with different shorts.
I do my tri training in my tri shorts. My thought is that I don't want to get used to my cycling shorts on long rides, then be in my tri shorts on race day and be miserable. I have gone up to 60 miles so far in my tri shorts with no more discomfort than I get in my normal cycling shorts.

My training plan for this HIM has a lot of bike/run bricks, so that is something I was thinking about. Generally both Sat (long bike/short run) and Sun (short bike/long run).
Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into some of these brands!

I only wear tri shorts when doing bricks or when my cycling shorts are dirty. I don't worry about being uncomfortable during the race due to the difference in shorts, but again, I've only done sprint tris.
I have a pair of Hincapie shorts that I like. I have Sugoi Evolutions that are by far my most favorite shorts ever. The padding in them is very narrow which fits my body better than some of the wider pads. They also come in a super short version that I've been meaning to get for a while.
I've stolen my husband's old Castelli bibs since getting so huge and I love them. I like all of Castelli's stuff though.
If I'm shopping around, I really like buying from backcountry.com and their outlet section because you can get stuff super cheap on there that's last year's model.

I wear hincapie bike shorts when necessary. It depends on the distance as to if I wear tri shorts or bike shorts. When I was doing HIM training last year, I did all my training rides in tri shorts since that is what I would be racing in. My tri shorts are Voler and I really like them.
