I had my lumbar spine MRI. No serious herniations. A bit of bulging in 2 discs, one is desiccated and also has an annular tear, and (this is the important part) one of them is bulging enough to be impinging a bit on the left descending nerve root between L4 and L5.
I have been going to acupuncture and she has helped me quite a bit. So far the results are temporary, but I think the more I go the more it will improve. Her opinion has been that I have a disc issue and that is causing the downstream muscles to spasm.
I asked the ortho today if he thought that could be the case and he said definitely possible, especially given the location of the pain and which nerve it is. He said keep going to acupuncture as long as it helps and if it stops helping to come back and get a cortisone shot in the spine.
I am still not sure if I will be able to run (impact on the lower back and all) but I probably will be able to resume my other activities!

I'm so happy for you! Diagnosis and a new job, congrats! I also have a bulging disc at L5, so high five to that. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's sciatic pain down my leg. It's never been as bad as it first was though, so I hope that acupuncture keeps helping you get out of this hell and to a level where it's manageable.
