We're now looking into booking rail tickets for Spain. Our long legs are Madrid --> Granada and Granada --> Seville.
We also plan on taking a day trip from Seville to Cordoba, and *perhaps* a day trip from Madrid to Toledo.
Cost-wise, it looks like a Eurail pass would be worth it if we could use it for our day trips too, but not if it could only be used for the long legs. Can they be used for those shorter trips? If so, any non-financial advantages/disadvantages of using a Eurail pass for the day trips?
I've never used a rail pass, but the trains in Spain are great. Renfre does a great job. I took trains from Madrid to Avila and El Escorial. We just bought tickets the day of and it was pretty cheap.
I absolutely love Granada. One of my favorite vacation days ever is in that city. Sitting in a square drinking Sangria and eating tapas all day. (They hold with the old tradition of one drink order free tapa.) Listening to wandering musicians, people watching all under Alhambra. Sigh, I want to go back.

I think you can still buy Renfre tickets from Madrid to Toledo in the upper level of El Corte Ingles, near the luggage dept. I was able to buy the tickets 1 day in advance with no problem. I don't remember it being that expensive.

My question isn't about whether we could buy tickets when in Spain. It is more along the lines of this--
Say my Madrid --> Granada and Granada --> Seville tickets work out to be $230 if purchased a la carte, but a 4 day Eurail pass would be $250. That would mean that, if I could use a Eurail pass for the Seville --> Cordoba day trip as well as the other 2 legs, opting for a Eurail pass would likely turn out to be slightly cheaper than buying the all of the legs (including the Seville --> Cordoba day trip) separately. (It would be a bigger savings over a la carte if we end up doing Madrid --> Toledo too).
So -- (1) could the Eurail pass be used for the Cordoba/Toledo day trips, and (2) if it could, is there any reason to NOT go that route (fewer eligible trains/annoyance of booking/not refundable/having to book in advance/anything else I may not be thinking of)?
