My back took a turn for the worse yesterday afternoon. It started to knot up and get painful. I went to the Sports Med non-surgical spine specialist today after a sleepless night. (Amen to my cycling team being sponsored by a major university's sports med dept!) Xrays showed a possible narrowing between disks in my middle back, but that might not be the cause of the problem. He thinks that I threw it out based on my old injury and recurring problems and that something set it off into spasms yesterday. So, I have a script to go to my PT for needling if I want it along with some good, strong muscle relaxers to take at night and an anti-inflammatory. I have no restrictions, so I'll ride (yeah!).
So, my plan is to continue to live on my heating pad the next few days. Take the meds at night and then call my PT if it isn't doing better by Monday.
Thanks, ya'll! I'm on day 4 of strong muscle relaxers & NSAIDs. My heating pad has also been great. You are supposed to heat 20 minutes 2-3 times/day. Over the years I've found that if I lay on it for an hour twice/day or at least 30 min/twice it helps more. My heating pad has a timer, so I don't forget to turn it off and risk a skin burn.
The big knots are gone. I'm hoping that it continues to get better day by day.
