So, we are authorized one car here in Korea. My husband's job basically requires that he has it all day every day. I usually manage to finagle getting the car one day a week to go on a grocery run and deal with other errands that I need the car to do...
Yesterday, I made the run to one of the larger bases in our area (they are all tiny, but this one is the largest, and has the largest commissary of the bases that are less than an hours drive away).
And they had no yogurt or lunch meat. None. And all of the specific cheese that I wanted to buy wasn't in stock, either (I settled for something else). It's just so freaking frustrating. It's not like I can easily get this stuff on the economy here. (of those items, I _can_ find yogurt locally, but have yet to find any plain, non-sweetened yogurt, which I like to cook with)
When I asked the manager about it, he basically shrugged and said they'd be getting a delivery "tomorrow". Which does me no damn good when I can't get the car again until next week.
It just boggles the mind how difficult it apparently is to keep basic items in stock. It's a crapshoot from week to week, hoping I can get most of what is on my grocery list, but pretty much knowing that this week _something_ won't be available. It's enough to turn one into a hoarder!
Have you filed for an ETP for a 2nd POV?? We did when we moved to our current post and it was approved in a few weeks. I have the good car and MH drives a $700 hooptie. It get's him from point A to B without issue ::knocks on wood::
I hear you on the commissary issue! ALL of the commissaries on the pen are out of yogurt and Almond Milk due to "supply issues." We've been out down here for 2 weeks and as soon as it's in stock, it's wiped clean. I've heard it's simple to make your own in the crock pot but have yet to try it.
We looked into filing an ETP when DH's job shifted to one that basically required having our car every day. And found out that it was taking 6-12 weeks to get approval _after_ every t was crossed and i was dotted properly (which seems to be a moving target).
We have opted to not get a second vehicle for that and a few other reasons (selling the vehicle when we leave is a concern - there are nearly no hoopties in the area for <$2k, and CS is now gone for our area, so there will be no new families or folks living offbase coming in anymore up here).
Maybe this is the weekend to try making yogurt. I've got the starters (there were supply issues back in November that prompted me to buy some). Guess I need to convince DH to pick up some milk at the teensy commissary on his base before coming home tonight. If it's still open when he leaves work... (and if they still have milk... I go to the larger commissary because it typically has fewer supply issues...)
I hate when my H has to use his truck for work stuff, period, because 99% of the time, it requires us to fill the tank again and it's pricey. I also remember the days when we only had one car and it was so frustrating.
Nope. No government vehicle option. If he doesn't have his car, why, there are these awesome free purple buses he can take to get from place to place. He doesn't need a government vehicle, because there are already transportation options available.
Those buses take forever to get anywhere. And he'd still need to get to work before public transit here can get him to the front gate (literally - the buses start at 5am, and is no transit option that will get him on base before 6am; he has a 6am meeting every day.)
It's just frustrating. Yesterday particularly so because I couldn't get the groceries I wanted, and then I had to deal with car maintenance that DH has been putting off for a month. Yesterday was a very bad, horrible, no good kind of day...

I'm sorry. Sometimes the commissaries here have stock issues (although not as bad). It will happen with the same items over and over again. A certain brand of yogurt, for example, they always get both nonfat and lowfat. Lowfat always sells out quickly while the nonfat sits there waiting to expire. Why can't they just order more of what people are buying? I admittedly hoard my favorite almond milk when it's available. I'm lucky if I see it once a month.
