I'm looking for tips on how to be a good host. I feel like I could be way better at this. My h's cousin, his wife and 3 kids are coming to visit us for 2.5 weeks. Any tips on how to prep?
When I am visiting in someone's home, I really like when they leave food out between meals. A nice combo of simple and healthy - like fruit, cereal boxes (especially overnight, in case I am up first), coffee cake or something sweet. Even if I know where to look, I hate opening cabinets and taking food out. But somehow, if its on the counter, I feel like it can/should be eaten.
And as a host, I really like to offer a non-fuss, predone breakfast. I usually make an egg-bake or a quiche, or buy bagels and cream cheese. Something about planning breakfast realy seems special. And I always set the breakfast table before I go to bed, so everyone feels like they are in a B&B.
And cold cuts in the fridge and bread for sandwiches. Sandwiches are super easy and really friendly for guests throughout the stay.
If you have a GPS, set it for your house and let them borrow it. Even with an iPhone, its really nice to be able to press "home" from anywhere.
And rent some videos from the library for the kids. Maybe ask for favorite shows and set the DVR for recording some shows.
