How long after a marathon can you expect to see unusual soreness? I have this soreness in my lower leg near the soleus area (yes I googled that). The first run after the marathon (2 weeks post mary)) it was very pronounced at the beginning of the run and then went away, but was sore after. The second run after the marathon (4 weeks post mary), it showed up vaguely (I'm hyper sensitive to it) about 1/2 mile in and went away shortly after.
Am I overreacting? Do I just need more rest? Could it be my shoes? I would REALLY like to get back on the road
ETA: I started experiencing this soreness about a week before the marathon and it plagued me the whole race. The soreness was apparent even with walking after the race. It is gone with walking now.
How many miles do you have on your shoes? It sounds like it has been going on too long to be typical soreness.
Well, I did some silly things in marathong training with my shoes. I did most of my training in my Saucony Rides, so they have at least 300 miles on them, I mixed in my Newtons occasionally on shorter runs I am guessing are due for replacing too. THEN, when I got to my 13/14 mile long runs, I bought Hokas b/c I knew I needed something to support the Saucony's (should have just got another pair of Saucony's). The Hoka's really didn't end up working out for my feet though but I did ALL of my longer runs in them so I felt like I should do my marathon in them.
For my last 2 runs after the marathon I used my Saucony's and Newton's respectively.
I vote for new shoes and see what happens. If that doesn't help, then??? You are probably going to need shoes soon anyway, so it isn't the end of the world if you get them a little early.
I'd probably do some more cross training until you're feeling 100%. No use aggravating something that still feels sore.
I can bounce back from other distances quickly, but it honestly takes me about a month for all the little aches and pains to go away after a marathon.
Don't rush it, it's not worth it!
Agreed! I'm sticking mainly to swimming, biking and lifting to get my core strengthened! In the meantime, I couldn't resist a good excuse to go to the running store on a rainy day- my fav store is on the other side of town, but TOTALLY worth the drive! Turns out all of my shoes (save the Hokas, which he said I was "all over") were toast.
Looks like I have some prontation issues, and the Wave Inspires were the perfect fix! The store pulled three shoes including that one and then video taped me running in each shoe. So, for now, I'm going to keep cross training and strengthening but I have a shoe to go back to when I'm ready!
