What are you looking for as a "non-wild 20-something?" I always thought Edmonds was cute but I don't know that it's "20-something-ish" Maybe Greenlake or something similar northend. Greelake has the lake to jog around and it's got proximity to a lot of other things in the area. You'll typically be travelling against traffic heading to Everett but living all the way downtown would be a nightmare coming back. I'd kind of suggest Greenlake or somewhere along the Aurora/Hwy 99 corridor toward Seattle. You can drive straight down Evergreen and avoid the freeway mess.
Sorry I'm not more help but I was Redmond (which I also love. Lots of Microsofties but not a lot of nightlife) when I lived here before, and Federal Way (southend) before that so I'm not familiar with most of the Seattle proper neighborhoods.
Ditto Edmonds being super cute, if we lived on the west side of the lake I think we'd probably live there. Can you be more specific about what you are looking for in your non-wild 20-something neighborhood? If I was commuting to Everett every day I'd probably look to Mill Creek, or Mukilteo out by the water.
I live in Greenwood, and I am not wild. I am, however, 35. You can rent a small 1bd for $1k, I think, around here (we charge $1250 for our 2bd condo). And I'm exactly 30 minutes away from Everett. IMO, Edmonds would fee too confined for me, and I would not suggest Lynnwood unless you love strip malls. Greenwood and Greenlake are awesome.
Mukilteo might be a thought too, particularly in the Harbour Pointe condos area. Easy commute to Everett, somewhat outdoorsy and nice views if you get in the right areas.
