Okay, don't laugh, but I bought a hybrid bike today. It was such a sunny day and I have been thinking about how great it would be to cycle round Cheshire as an additional activity to my running, plus we are planning on heading back to the champagne region and cycling round the maisons. Around here, my hubs has a road bike, so the plan is for him to do his crazy long rides, then we meet at a country pub (there are tons) and grab lunch and cycle home together. I wanted something that I could ride on roads and light trails, wear jeans for short journeys but also chuck the Lycra on for longer rides and not look silly. I originally wanted a Pashleigh, but it was a bit Downton Abbey-ish and in the end I didn't even test ride it because I felt I'd look a bit daft.
I have a hybrid (it was a hand-me-down), and it works just fine for all of the uses you mentioned above. Like you, at the moment, I have no tri plans, and my bikes work well for what I need them to do. (I also have a beach cruiser & a mountain bike.) LOL! We have a bike problem. Anyway, I think you & your DH will have a lot of fun with both of you having bikes. Enjoy!
Congrats on your new purchase! I love my hybrid- it's so comfy for riding the trails near our home. I've even done a few sprint triathlons on her, and she did great. Enjoy- your plans for riding sound fun.
Congrats on the new bike! I am hoping to get one this year too--just for casual bike rides as well.
Do it! I had forgotten how much I liked riding until I did a bike ride around Paris with a bunch of girlfriends last September. Also, rode in Amsterdam - pure joy, bicycles seem to have more rights than cars there.
Congrats on the new bike! All types of fitness are acceptable here, you don't have to be a crazy dedicated cyclist to enjoy riding, and you don't need a fancy pants bike for casual riding. Hell, you can work up a good sweat on anything
