So I ran a very small 5K on Saturday and came in 3rd out of the women.
I thought maybe I might get an award so I stuck around for a while afterwards in the cold rain. I finally asked someone what kind of awards they were doing if any. But I think he said that they were just doing awards for the winners and I can't remember if they were doing age group too. One of the women that beat me was close to me in age so I figured I wasn't going to get anything so I left.
Then I thought about it afterwards and neither of the women were hanging around so I was curious.
In small races, if the people that win the award aren't there, do they award it to the next person in line? Or just mail it to them?
At local races I usually see them send the award home with somebody who knows/trains with the award winner. No mail* and no awarding to the next in line.
*Pint glasses are common awards, and they are not great to mail.
A lot of times it will say in the race program/info. what the awards are and if they will mail them. Most bike races won't mail awards, but the promoter will let you pick them up after the race.
Around here they don't give the award to the next person in line, but I'd say there is a 50/50 shot they would mail the awards to you. Some races have their act together and some don't.

Congrats on the ag award!
Normally the races around here will designate a place to pick up the awards if you miss the ceremony. Typically whatever running store was associated with the race. This has has been my experience even with the small ones.

Congrats! I did a small local (Nova) 5K where I came in 3rd in my age group, but didn't stick around for the ceremony. The race organizer later emailed everyone and said to contact him for the award to be mailed to your home. So I did, and the organizer said he'd mail it, but I never got it. Womp womp.

Remember the open water series here? they were supposed to mail me my gift card in September. I got it in January.
Of the two that I wasn't around for, one was mailed (a HM age group award), and then for my marathon award, they just gave my award to someone who swore she knew me. She then mailed it, but they followed up to make sure I received it. Both were small races.

I've actually sat THROUGH a race awards ceremony where I won something ... and somehow STILL missed getting my award. LOL (I wasn't expecting to even place, so I wasn't paying close attention when they called names. I came in 3rd in my AG in an OWS.)
That race director offered to keep it for me to pick up OR I could paypal him $3 to cover shipping and he'd mail it. I picked it up, and then understood why it was so expensive to send: that sucker was HEAVY.

I think sometimes they will call you to pick up if they have your award. Some races don't really do anything, though. I ran a race a few weeks ago, and got 3rd in my AG based on gun time. Later, when they adjusted the times for chip time, I actually came in first in my AG and second overall. They didn't contact me to get the right medal or anything, but I am not sure how organized they are- ie if the other people got their medals at the race, then they might not even realize that I had the wrong one.
Anyway, long story short, if you want to find out, I would just email the RD.

For money/gift certificates, I have found most will be mailed. Medals/trophies are usually not, but most will let you pick them up if you contact them.
