I just want to share this here in case anyone else feels close to the cause of vision loss and blindness. And because it's related to my marathon & this is where I come to talk running.
I decided to dedicate this race to my mom, who has cone-rod dystrophy in both eyes and has recently arrived at the point of being legally blind. After talking it over with her, I'm raising money for Helen Keller International. It's rather informal, but they are tracking donations for me under the name "Marathon for Mom."
That is so awesome of you to do this! I'm so sorry about what your mom is going through, I can't even imagine. I have someone close to me who is dealing with untreatable and severe vision loss and I know (second hand) how scary it is for her.
What a wonderful thing you are doing - blindness is something that terrifies me and I donate monthly to the Guide Dog Association. I cannot imagine how scary it would be to lose your vision. You are awesome.
brit - I'm sorry to hear that. It is such a hard thing to watch someone go through. I took my mom to an appointment last week to get some items & resources to help her. Everything just hit me really hard that day, and I knew I needed to do something. She's so generous & positive that her thoughts were immediately to do something to help others.
@cheshire - that is so good of you. My mom has already remarked that if things get much worse for her she'd like a guide dog someday. I could see her doing really well with one.
This is so great to hear! I love running for charity, it made my marathon training and race more emotional than I expected. I am so sorry to hear about your mom.
