I have heard so many horror stories that I didn't want to take it but my doc said it would be ok and not to worry. I asked for the lowest dosage, so I will be taking 5mg. She did prescribe me the kind that puts you to sleep instead of Ambien CR, which release stuff to keep you asleep.
I've taken a LOT of Ambien :-) We use it sometimes in my job to transition from one shift to another. My OB also prescribed some to me during pregnancy to help me sleep.
The big thing with Ambien is to take it AT BEDTIME. Like, take a pill, then immediately get in bed and go to sleep. Don't try to write one more email, FB chat with a buddy, or whatever. It will f*ck you up. Seriously, I've had whole IM chats that I don't remember (which is embarrassing!) Also, be careful if you get up in the middle of the night to pee or whatever because it might make you feel a little unsteady on your feet.

I took it during the last two weeks of pregnancy because I couldn't sleep. I made sure my H was still awake and in the living room in case I got up and tried to do some weird shit. I was paranoid but never had any problems
I take it, the only side effect I had at first was if I didn't go to bed right away, I'd sort of hallucinate, so once I noticed it kicking it, I went straight to sleep. The other thing is if you want it to work, take it on an empty stomach.
you can always try 1/2 a pill at first as well.
it effects all people differently, some don't have those horror story reactions to it, some do. if you don't like it you can always ask for something different.
I have a love affair with Ambien. My dr suggested that you take it and go directly to bed to keep the wierdo things from happening. I keep mine on my bedside table and take it when I'm actually in bed. The only thing I get up for after I've taken it is to go to the bathroom. As far as I know I've never done anything weird.
I was prescribed it in January and like you I was very nervous because of the stories I had heard. I was afraid I would try to drive, or eat sticks of butter, ectect. I took 5mg and never had the slightest issue. It did not even make me fall asleep quickly, it took probably a half hour. Also, I woke up probably 5 hours later and did not have any sort of hungover drugged feeling. That is just my experience though.
Hmm. I think I will start it this weekend since my husband is home during the nights.
The idea of sleep walking terrifies me but I keep trying to reason with myself that 5mg won't turn me into a walking zombie. I hope...
I am glad to hear it has worked well for others without problem. I get maybe 1 week a month where I sleep like a normal person at night and she did tell me to lay off of it when I am able to sleep naturally and use it when I can't.

It didn't really work for me. I could take it and still be fully functional. One time I woke up with a popsicle stick stuck in my hair but that was when I was mixing it with other things.
I don't take it anymore but if it helps you then go for it.

I fucking love ambien. But I would say don't even take it on the way to bed, take it IN bed.
As evidenced by the fact that it's 4am where I live and I'm awake it doesn't give me a totally solid 8 hours, but it's a huge improvement on the 1-3 hours is get on my own without ambien.
