I'm doing IM Timberman 70.3 in August, and need to book a hotel fast. The two listed on the race website (a Marriott and Holiday Inn Express) are both already fully booked that weekend, so I'm exploring on kayak.com.
I found:
a Rodeway Inn, $90/night, 10.4 miles from the park where the race starts
a Super 8, $199/night, 13.5 miles from the park.
Both of the above have 2 stars out of 5 on kayak.com. There's also a small, independent B&B, also 2 stars ($170/16.5 miles), which could be fine, but could also be... not fine. I would also feel more weird about being up & making noise at 4am in an old B&B--although on a race weekend everyone is probably there for the same reason.
I don't know what the vacation rental market is there, but would you consider checking out VRBO for a house? Especially if you know others going that might want to share?
Otherwise, I'd probably be nervous about making too much noise in the middle of the nights at a B&B, but also worried about hearing others when I'm already stressed about getting enough sleep.
From people who have done this race before, I've heard about some camping options, but not really about houses like people do in Lake Placid for Ironman.
I like camping, but the night before a 70.3 I want a real mattress, KWIM?
I'd go for the Rodeway Inn- and agree it's weird about Super 8 being $$. Good point about the B&B, I'd be too nervous about others keeping ME awake- same fear in hotel, but less likely I guess.
Is the B&B on tripadvisor? I'd be inclined to go that route, cause I love B&Bs and I'm sure it will be booked with racers. Otherwise I'd pick the Roadway Inn for 1/2 the price.
Thanks for indulging me, y'all. I booked a room at the Rodeway - I have until a couple days before to cancel if anything better comes along, but at least now I have a place to stay.
I camped the night before the Bolder Boulder once and I thought I was going to die. I can't imagine doing that the night before a tri. I'm glad you found a place!
